Designing a New Version Control System?

tekvov asks: "When Linus Torvalds decided to use BitKeeper as the version control system for Linux there seemed to be a lot of controversy and many challenges to create a better system than CVS. My question is exactly what would this 'better system' look like? How is the subversion project, Tigris, doing at creating a new version control system? Basically, does the Open Source Community need new tools in this aspect of development? And if so, how should these new tools look?"

I'm strongly leaning on the fact that Linus wants to 'dare to be different'. Whenever people do this because they want to push the envelope, it always comes back on them.

BitKeeper is an interesting idea, but in practice I haven't found it showstoppingly impressive. CVS is still one of the best revision control systems going, IMHO.

However, history has shown that when tools like BitKeeper hit the spotlight and it's their time to perform, the kinks are worked out after fast. It stands a chance of being a good tool for the job, if Linus and co. manage it properly.

There are many good tools that have been around for a long time. CVS is the obvious example. Maybe what should be considered is enhancing these tools to match some of the capabilities of their commercial counterparts. A list of capabilities can probably be summarized by the discussion that follows.

There is an improved (GPL)Version Control System it is just not released yet. *VS started as patches that were refused by CVS because the changes were to radical. It has grown from that code. I am not the developer of this black book project, but http://undeadlinux.com [EvilEntity Linux] will be one of the first beta tester outside of its current enviroment. *VS is used in full production, in a large programing shop. Since the project is not released I cannot speak the name as I don't want to steal their thunder, You'll know about it when it comes out!. So everyone can stay calm something better is comming down the pipe. From what I'm told, It will be out soon ???

I with every fiber of being hate CVS. This is one area where most of the commercial products are vastly superior to open source. Starteam makes CVS it's whining little bitch. In case it wasn't abundently clear. I hate CVS.
