Rendezvous Developer Stuart Cheshire Interviewed
overunderunderdone writes "Found this interview of Stuart Cheshire, the Apple employee who developed Rendezvous (a.k.a. Zeroconf) and co-chairs the ZEROCONF working group. He provides some interesting history behind Zeroconf. But I thought his ideas for the future of Rendezvous was more interesting. He envisions a single protocol for everything from the keyboard, hard disk, peripherals, to the net connection -- just one kind of socket in the back of your box."

Slashdot is using censorship! It is trying to eridicate free and open discussion like we know slashdot to be, it has the following RESTRICTIONS in place to Censor you
They claim they don't, but they do, wonder why their are so many trolls, crapflooders and lamers on slashdot, because they are fighting for their rights! Slashdot is trying to silence the trolls. Remove the filters, the trolls get bored, and slashdot will be troll free!
- Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)
- Unnessary posting delays. Hasnt taco learned to touch type? A lot of posts are typed in less than 20 seconds and it is a ANNOYING DELAY! 2 minute ban? Come on, so some are faster then others, big deal, some people have more to say than others
- Broken moderation system, The whole point is to sort the gems from the crap, yet a lot of posts designed to make a LIVELY DISCUSSION are MODERATED as flamebait! Come on, not everyone likes X, but just because some one bashes it dosent mean its Flamebait. Flame bait is more useful for DIRECT INSULTS and not legitmate discussions.
The "troll" moderation reason is fragmented and broken, why? Because they are trying to use an obsolete usenet term on a realtime discussion, "trolls" can cover a huge blanket of ideas.- Crapfloods, a meaningless flood of random letters or text, which the lameness filter does a crappy job at trying to stop, besides trolls have written tools using the opensource slashcode to generate crapfloods which bypass the filter
- Links to offensive websites, the most common one is known a http://www.goatse.cx, a awful site which shows a bleeding anus being stretched on the front page. Trolls sneak these links in by posting messages that look legitimate, but infact are sneaky redirects to the site. Common examples include rd.yahoo.com, www.linux-kernel.tk, goatsex.cjb.net, and googles "Im feeling lucky".
- Trying to break slashdot, this is actually a good thing, as it helps test slashdot for bugs. Famous examples include the goatse.cx javascript pop-up, the pagewidening post and the browser crashing post!
Subnet banning, this bans a user unless they email jamie macarthy with their mp5ed ipids. This is unfair, and banning a subnet BLOCKS A WHOLE ISP SOMETIMES, and not that individual user! This can cause chaos! But real trolls use annoymous proxys to get around this so THIS JUST BANS LEGITMATE USERS! Also, they are trying to censor some anoymous proxies, mainly from countrys like africa, so this yet more DISCRIMINATION!Pink page of Death, This censors people who use legitmate proxys or firewalls.
The Bitchslap! An unethical punishment which is applied to moderators who fight censorship against this site! In addition the Editors use their un-limited mod points to create a communist style censored discussion on slashdot!
But, the issue that concerens us the most, is the COMMENT QUOTA. A discrimatory system that stiffles discussion, cripples the community and will ultimateley destroy slashdot unless it is removed! Annoymous cowards are allowed only 10 posts a day! This is unethical! Users with negative karma only get two! That is DISCRIMINATION! How would you like to only be able to speak once a day, just because of the color of your skin. That would be racism, and slashdot is discrimitating on people just because of a negative number in a database! BOYCOTT SLASHDOT! LET THEM DIE!
We wan't these stupid useless restrictions REMOVED! This comment will be posted again and again until it does!

I feel it is my duty to point out an interesting parallel I've found between two second-class societal entities: Women and open-source software. At first glance, one might think of the two as being not at all likely to be associated with each other, but a more thorough understanding demands a closer look.
Women have, throughout almost the entire length of history, been treated as second-class citizens. This is only fitting, as their physical and mental capabilties are both substantially below those of their male counterparts. Women are like open-source software hippies: They accomplish nothing and then complain about the second-class treatment they receive. Their achievements are limited, unremarkable, and in almost every instance, able to be completely surpassed by those of their male counterparts.
Take sports, for example: Why are there no women in the American NFL, NBA, NHL, or MLB? Feminists will shout loudly that it's because they're not allowed, but this is not true; the real reason is that there are no women skilled enough to compete against the highly competitive and infinitely more capable men. Even the strongest, bulkiest woman will crumple under the weight of a 350-pound linebacker colossus.
This brings me to another important observation: Women produce much less testosterone than men, and so, without artificial supplements, are doomed to weakness and incapability. They have barely any muscle to speak of; most women over 175 pounds are simply fat, whereas men are perfectly capable of achieving in excess of 250 pounds of pure, woman-crushing muscle.
Take scientific progress: Who invented the television? The automobile? The airplane? The light bulb? The steam engine? The automatic penis enlarger? Atomic energy? The Periodic Table of the Elements? Penicillin? Men, all men. What have women accomplished? Nothing. Nada.
Take intelligence. The great geniuses in history: Einstein. Picasso. Heisenberg. DaVinci. Hitler. Shakespeare. Fermat. Himmler. All men. Can you name even ONE female genius? Of course you can't, because none exist; there is no such thing as a female who doesn't live by riding the coattails of her smarter and more capable male counterpart.
Take the penis: Who has the penis? The man does, not the woman. The woman has a mere hole where the penis should be. No wonder women feel so subordinate and inferior: All the whining and excuses of the Feminist Left is merely a result of an extended case of penis envy.
But enough about women. How could all the evidence I've demonstrated possibly tie into the open-source software movement? A valid question!
The OSS proponent's incessant superiority complex, even when deep-down, he knows he is in last place, smacks of similarity with the woman's complaints of being in second place even when she knows she is nothing but an inferior, penis-lacking clone of her male counterpart.
Ever wonder why geeks hate Microsoft so much? It's because they're jealous; they know they can never even dream of accomplishing what Microsoft has. Microsoft is the OSS movement's Emmanuel Goldstein - the scapegoat for all that is wrong with OSS.
Ever wonder why women hate men so much? Now you understand.
I'm quite aware that the glimpse I've presented at how open-source software's never-ending and always-failing attempt to gain respect in the world is so similar to women's similar attempts to make up for their missing Y chromosome will be upsetting to many readers, but reality is not always cozy. Although women, like open-source software projects, are dramatically inferior, we men can comfort them by looking down on them with pity, holding doors for them (as they are too weak to do it themselves), and letting them suck on our penises, because they do want our cum, even when they say they don't.

Here is an opp for someone with a few spare bucks and a patent atty to stick it to the big boys, patent it now, grab it early, I mean how hard can it be to write a patent that says "One protocol to subde them all ?"
I am kidding of course, writng patent abstract is a royal pain if youve ever done it, if they are good enough to withstand scrutiny that is.
Im game, 1 protocol for everything lets call it HTTP, that would rock, native http hard drive, just plug a HD into the network, instant web server.
I mean, wouldnt it be REALLY cool to have EVERYTHING talking back and forth in HTTP, then we would never have to worry about IIS or apache security again, it would ALL be swiss cheese.

When we remove the Negro and Mestizo numbers from American crime statistics, what do we find? We find that America has the lowest crime rate in the industrialized world. It is the Negro and Mestizo which skew the crime stats. America has a Negro problem, not a crime problem. The only solution is the expulsion of the Negro and Mestizo from America. I ama homosexual. I boughtan Apple computer because of its well earned reputation for being "the" gay computer. Since I have become an Apple owner, I have been exposed to a whole new world of gay friends. It is really a pleasure to meet and compute with other homos such as myself. I plan on using my new Apple computer as a way to entice and recruit young schoolboys into the homosexual lifestyle; it would be so helpful if you could produce more software which would appeal to young boys. A single protocol for everything, eh? OK. So when someone finds an exploit, they can break EVERYTHING on your system/connected to your system. Wonderful.
