New Features For 2.5 Linux Kernel

An anonymous person writes "The current development version of the Linux kernel is 2.5. At the recent Linux kernel summit, it was agreed to have a "feature freeze" on this kernel by October 31, 2002. Here's a story looking at what's left to be merged before the freeze. Projects most likely to make it into 2.5 (and thus be a part of the next stable kernel, 2.6), include: the reverse mapping VM, the Linux Security Module framework, User Mode Linux and support for filesystems greater than 2TB."

    After 2.6 is released, will Linus dub the next incarnation to be 2.7x for a 2.8, or 2.9x for a 3.0 release?

      I believe that 2.9 would be the development version for 2.10, not 3.0. (But I admit that I have no clue on what the dev version for 3.0 would be called.)

      Anyway, 3.0 would mean complete rewrite of the code, and I don't think that such a thing is planned in a nearby future.

    I think it's grand that we're already halfway, with this new milestone, to the 3.0 mark. It's great to see development moving along at such a good rate. Finally support for filesystems greater than 2TB, eh? Wow, now I can reduce my pr0n cluster to only 256 machines. Hehe. Keep it up guys.. keep up all the good work.

Cowboy Neal had a big big hunger for man-taco. This would not be fully fulfilled, but he was thankful for the mini-taco anyway.

    "Will you marry me, Cowboy Neal?" Commander Taco asked. "Of coarse I will!" he squealed giddily. They stared at each other akwardly for a moment. "Uh... where's the ring?" asked Cowboy Neal. "Oh! Right!" said Commander Taco as he assumed the goatse position. Cowboy Neal was up to his elbow in the spiciest of taco sauces. He never found the ring. That didn't stop him for searching for the next eleven hours.

    Then they were both taken to jail for sodomy and raped in jail, much to their delight.

    Doesn't this bode ill for the kernel dev efforts, if the concept of "feature freeze" must be reported on and placed in quotes as if it were some novel new design technique?

    This should be standard practice. Sure reporting on the features to be included before the freeze is worthwhile, I can see why that's interesting, but "feature freeze" in quotes? C'mon already. every two-bit dev team from Seattle to Sri Lanka must reach a point of "feature freeze" during a dev cycle.

    What's so ugly about modversions that some of the core kernel developers would like to see them dropped?

    Your help is requested:

    As many of slashdot's regular readers know, VA Software - owner of this weblog - are in big financial trouble. With the current volatility in the stock-market and downturn in the US economy, there can be little hope of saving anything from the wreckage of VA Linux. It is highly unlikely that slashdot could be sold to another company - the weblog market is overcrowed and the manifest failure of the moderation/karma system will surely seal its fate.

    That is where you - the reader - step in, slashdot's trolls will soon no longer be needed by Microsoft and will be looking for new jobs: they need your help. Please post possible career options in a reply to this message. We wouldn't be able to offer a cruiser as a prize this time but the best suggestions will win a copy of Windows XP.

    A few notes: there are some obvious jobs that slashdot's trolls would enjoy - donkey semen extractor or human toilet - but do bear in mind that, as the opensource movement demonstrates, a hobby you love may not translate into gainful employment. Also don't insult the trolls by suggesting jobs they couldn't possibly do; I'm thinking particularly of anything requiring face to face contact with other human beings.

    After the preemptive patch, that's the first patch I run on a plain vanilla kernel.
