The Last Place

angela morgenstern writes "Buddhist Bhutan was the last place on earth to legalize television. Trading traditional practices for daytime soaps and WWF, many fear that western influence will trample the culture." A whole set of articles about the effect of American television on one of the most remote places on earth - it's official, there is no escape from American "culture".

What is so "wrong" with American culture? Why everybody hates it?! If our culture can so easily break your own traditions from usual TV broadcasts then you should blame only yourself, not Americans. And if you don't like American Rationalism then welcome back to medieval age...

I pretend to be st8 by pretending to like crappy cartoons with ugly women and puting up a wallpaper on my desktop to decive people. To the Europeans,

I am American and have been living in Oslo for 3 years, and let me say I completely understand you frustration with the US. I would be willing to say it actually bothers me more because I feel a personal embarassment and shame knowing I am from there. For god sake look who those idiots voted in as president. But on the American side, one thing that is not understood by Europeans is that Americas have no idea how sheltered their lives really are. They dont know sh*t about what happens overseas because it doesnt make the papers or the news its "over there" so it doesnt matter. Two thirds of the people I graduted with 7 years ago are still living in my home town not having been anywhere (and a 2 week vacation to London or Paris is not the European experience) When you grow up in the States you dont really realize what is really going on because you know nothing else, you think thats just how the world works and they never leave. Its sad but true.

Just try to remember that not all Americans are that way.... some of us have seen the light.

Well said. Things would be better off if we didn't always muddle around in other people's business. America has been in a "holier than thou" mind frame for way, way too long. This is coming from a US citizen, BTW.
