Carmack Expounds on Doom III

Rainier Wolfecastle writes: "Non-high-end-comp-owning geeks rejoice! GameSpot is reporting that John Carmack has confirmed that Doom III is Xbox-bound. Carmack said that id is totally commited to bringing the game to Microsoft's console with its visual splendor intact. Best of all, the game could be available on the Xbox as soon as May next year." And Warrior-GS writes: "John Carmack gave a two-hour presentation about Doom 3 and engine technology. GameSpy reports on the presentations and analyzes Carmack's comments and how they apply to the future of gaming. There is also a look at the demo of Doom III"

Why is the Slashdot crowd always hanging on some vaporware peddling by a man who's on his way down in the video game world?

Look, Carmack did great with Wolfenstein 3D, and Doom was pretty okay, but there's only so many times you can dress up a cabbage in a pretty silk number and call it Cinderella. FPS's are like porn-once you've seen one, you've seen 'em all, and id's offerings aren't even close to the best anymore.

"But wait!" you cry. "Doom3 has like, hardware texture and lighting, and zbuggering, and mip-mapped megapixels, or something. I read it on a benchmark site where a red bar (which represented Doom3) was longer than a blue bar (which represented Half-Life)." Listen friend, if you wanna fetishize technology, be my guest. Pull that $400 waffle iron out of your case and have intercourse with it for all I care(I recommend doing this 2-3 hours after powering down the computer, so as to allow it to cool down fully.) But don't kid yourself about Doom 3, it's not going to be a revolution in video games, or even FPS's for that matter. Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, the Sims-those are the true innovators of FPS. Doom 3 will come and go, and your life won't change a bit (although you might stay up a few nights crusing USENET for cracks). In the meantime, realize that Carmack, like Michael Jackson, was once the "King of Pop," but now that title belongs to Britney Spears. So go buy a Pepsi, ya know?

It seems weird thinking oh John starting to work on the next level of id technology. Doom III seems like such a technological shock that it's pretty tough to imagine what more could be done at the time being. Also, anyone hear any rumors on when Quake III gets GPL'ed? HEY WAIT isn't there a VS.NET clause saying you can't release GPL software? Looks like id'll have to stick to Vs 6.0. But would Microsoft even dare sue id?

I am at quakecon... OK?!? There is some seriously cool shit going on here. I got like all the girls gone wild videos transferred over the network. I also just grabbed this cool ammo crate thing from the awards ceremony. On top of that, the mister sinus theater guys just ripped Britney Spears to shreds in a way that no one has fragged her before. So, yeah. John Carmack spoke. He gave those dumasses who bought an xBOx a reason to keep their POS hardware. Shit. Doom III is going to set new standards. We saw it in the doom III demo. Let me finish by saying I wish I had more beer.

    Oh sure, brilliant.

Lose 150$ per console which they will never get back. Lose 2 billion on XBox live which they never will get back.

They created the XBOX to tap into the video game market and make money.

Well, why is it the only platform on the market that is losing money, then?

Please don't dignify Trent Reznor by referring to him as "who". He is one of the sorriest excuses for an "artist" produced by the mid-90s generation. He's like hair-satan-metal of the 80s, he pumps out wave after wave of same-sounding screaming angry crap, which sells like hotcakes to 13-year-old upper middle class kids who are mad 'cause mum and dad won't let them smoke dope in their bedroom -- they actually make them go OUTSIDE to get high! Fucking Oppressive Bastards!! "I can't wait until they give me my measley $25 weekly allowance so I can go buy another album with music that echoes the dark gothic void of my black soul."

Oh wait, this is slashdot, not kuro5hin. I just pissed off every regular poster here.... Hey boys, your Uncle Jack will probably buy you both weed and NIN if you let him put on the Santa suit and cornhole you like last christmas.

  6. Nah, they're gamer requirements by BlackMesaResearchFac · · Score: 0, Troll
While the requirements are high, people ought to understand that's the way things are with games. Gamers should especially be aware of this fact.

Besides, the way you describe it...

More than likely, anyone with less than a Geforce3, or Radeon 8500 (i.e. has programmable vertex and pixel shaders and DDR memory), 128mb or ram, and ~750mhz will not be able to play this game at playable frame rates.
...most serious gamers have that or well beyond and I don't know what games you've been playing lately, but most already run poorly with anything less.

The only real reason I have to buy a new computer these days is for computer game support. Game environments are an ever improving assortment of eye-candy and I wouldn't want it any other way.

And if game makers can get their products out faster and make them run better because they don't support the more legacy components that's fine by me.

I want my game to be all it can be, even if I have to wait a few more months to play it so I can upgrade my system first (as I just did, waiting 6 months to upgrade w/o buying any new games...luckily Wizardry 8 has a long playing life and most of the good games of 2002 didn't start coming out until Q2).

I agree that is sucks when you're at that stage when only games can run (or run well) on your system but I think it's worth it in the long run.
