I love the way Slashdot editors allow these malformed opinions on front-page articles just because twenty-five people replied to a story saying they didn't like the movie.
Slashdot editors need to be journalists, not editorialists. Give us the facts, and leave the "status quo" geek mindset for each reader to decide.
By the way, here are the compilation instructions:
Compile/launcher_main
Compile/launher
When you go to compile/engine, you'll get 2 unresolved externals. Do a search for the two functions and comment it out (each is only called once)
Compile/engine
Compile filesystem/filesystem_stdio
Compile/gameui
Copy gameui.dll to../hl2/bin/
Compile/materialsystem
Compile/shaderdx8
Compile/studiorender
Compile/tier0
Compile/vgui2
Compile/vguimatsurface
Compile/vphysics
Compile/vstdlib
There you go, then go ahead and run hl2.exe (add "-window" to run in windowed mode)

Looks like there's some id code in there too. If this is real, it could ugly.
I think that these companies should support third party applications or, atleast, ports to differnt operating systems. Anything that expands your marketshare, right?
They're building a database of known but "repented" filesharers, so they can "check up" on them later. Basically takes the busy work out of hunting down Kazaa users. (How many people will actually never pirate another song after this? Exactly. Now you've just made your copyright-infringing ass known to the RIAA. Nice one).
What a wonderful idea!
Please e-mail me with your name, adress, and telephone number so that we can have a "personal" chat about the topic.

Unfortunatly, the "everyone else is doing it" defense won't fly infront of a judge.
Yes, we all do it, and we all get away with it because no one has any particular reason to check on us as an individual.
However, the Senator made a reason when he opened his mouth about piracy.
Kind of a "people in glass houses" lesson to be learned here.
It seems weird thinking oh John starting to work on the next level of id technology. Doom III seems like such a technological shock that it's pretty tough to imagine what more could be done at the time being.
Also, anyone hear any rumors on when Quake III gets GPL'ed?
HEY WAIT isn't there a VS.NET clause saying you can't release GPL software? Looks like id'll have to stick to Vs 6.0. But would Microsoft even dare sue id?
Either the law of bandwidth has caught up with Listen4Ever, or my IP has been blocked (which is quite extraordinary, cosidering I'm on dial-up), because I'm getting a 403 going there...

It's an HTML editor with WYSIWYG ideas, i.e. (horrible pun) you can "click in" elements, but you're still getting the raw HTML. I'd highly recomend it, and most of all, it's FREE
Wait wait, while 90% of my age group think they are '31337 hax0rs' just because they tricked someone into installing the Back Orfice server, not all of us are so blissuflly ignorant.
There are those of us who understand and use computers and the internet like the "elders" (30 year olds?) referred to in the article. We aren't all script kiddies.

I got it to compile and can very much say it's not a hoax. An intersting thing is that the launcher workspace builds two exe's: hl2.exe and tf2.exe
Like I said the code compiles fine, and runs until somewhere inside the VGUI_Init procedure (console initilization, to be precise) where it crashes.
I'm working on re-compiling all the DLLs to debug (idiot me did release initally) so I can step in here and try to fix it.
Dear Valve, please don't kill me.

Isn't the point of this obvious?

In the new Harry Potter book, their OWLs (standardized tests) have a lowest score of "T, Troll."

Sure hope it'll run on my 533... the beta sure as hell didn't.
If you haven't noticed, politics seems to be a big thing amoung the "geek" crowd. How many of us have read 1984 or Animal Farm?
The mission editor is MFC, nay, it's MFC^n. Lots of code... lots of dialog boxes...
