Firefly Premieres Tonight

fm6 writes "Firefly, Joss Whedon's 'anti-Trek drama' premieres tonight, on Fox, 8 E/P. I normally despise hypespeak, but this time it's the only language that fits: this is groundbreaking, mind-boggling, totally original. I've seen a bootleg of the pilot (which, unfortunately, the network is holding back) and I promise you this is the most geek-friendly SF you've seen in a long time. Yes, more so than Star Trek and B5, and way past Star Wars. I've never seen the future so skillfully, realistically, and lovingly portrayed. Here is the Official Site and a leading fan site." This is the single new show this season I have added a season pass for to the old Tivo. But I'll probably watch it live. This looks like it could be as good as we hope.

Firefly will probably be stupid. After all, everyone knows that Star Trek is the real future. Captain Kirk forever, knock-offs never! Beam me up, Scotty.

This is the same old stuff, though perhaps rehashed with a "hip, new attitude". Take a look at the characters page, which simplifies them to their dull roles: "The Fugitive", "The Mercenary", "The Pilot", "The Doctor", etc. They're two dimensional. Cardboard. Those aren't characters, they're placeholders around which some jokes and special effects can be wrapped.

I'm not saying that Star Trek/Wars is much better, but at least they *tried* to have characters. Firefly is looking like an old war movie with "The Black Guy", "The Loose Cannon", and of course, "The Pointexter."

    And what's the gripping premise?

Set 500 years in the future in the wake of a universal civil war, FIREFLY tells the tale of Serenity, a small transport spaceship without a homeport. Captain Malcolm ("Mal") Reynolds commands Serenity for legitimate transport and salvage runs, as well as, more "entrepreneurial" endeavors.
    Oooh, groundbreaking stuff there.

So give me a break already. Yeah there's a new sci-fi show. If we're lucky, there'll be some new hot chicks every week. But don't make the mistake of thinking this is groundbreaking, original material. Enjoy it for what it is.

Ah! An elitist! I was wondering when you would rear your ugly head. In a Slashdot article about television, not seeing a comment of this form until this late is a rarity. Come on, read along with ol' foobar: "I never watch television except for the McNeill-Lehrer Report, which has sucked since Lehrer left. The only worthwhile forms of entertainment are Shakespeare, anime, and movies with nobody you've ever heard of in them."

(Before you mod me down, think about the fact that I'm drunk. And still, I was a little funny. Take that into consideration.)

(And for you fanboys with mod points: it's me, Joss.)

Hey dipshit, who the fuck asked you, you fucking knobgobbler? If you don't understand what that post was about, please keep your amazing fucking amount of goddamn ignorance to yourself.

So go back to masturbating in your mom's fucking basement, live for the next Vin Fucking Diesel movie, and shut the FUCK up. Unlike you, I've got better things to do than suck the dick of an administration that obviously is no better than the terrorists they purport to 'war on'. So put up or shut the fuck up you Apple Pie/ Patriotic/McFucking Donalds AC shit-eater.

BTW, if my motherfucking reasoning isn't clear, perhaps you should rip your head out of your fat fucking ass, and write a book, make some music, or code some software, fuckface.

C'mon, Farscape has worn out any originality or interest it had when it started. It was fun for a while, but lately it's just been phoning it in (or at least, last I checked).

Let Farscape go. Something better will come along. Maybe even something without muppets.

Well, Firefly was absolutely craptacular. Not since Joss Whedon's last masturbatory fantasy have so many flat, uninteresting, stereotypical characters been combined with piss-poor special effects and 'epileptic monkey at the keyboard' writing. Let's run down the list, shall we?

Overall assessment: If given a choice between watching further episodes of Firefly and letting 418 rabid ferrets gnaw out my eyes, I'd have to go with the rabid ferrets. At least they're entertaining.
