Examining the Antikythera Mechanism

Mr. Droopy Drawers writes "An ancient piece of clockwork shows the deep roots of modern technology. Found in 1900 off the coast of Antikythera, Greece, a clockwork mechanism was found to be a device for calculating the motion of the earth and planets. In an article in The Economist, Michael Wright, the curator of mechanical engineering at the Science Museum in London, says the device demonstrates mechanical principles that were thought not devised until the 17th century. The article quotes research done by Derek Price. Here's Mr. Price's article from Scientific American. Also found some quicktime movies of the mechanism at The University of Macedonia. Very interesting reading."

I think it's Starz Family Edition or something. STZFE is the channel code.

There's only 23 minutes left. The balloon scene is coming up, so you'd better get watching.

The article implies that the late Derek Price, Professor of Scientific History at Yale, fudged some of the evidence regarding this device in order to suit his theory. I worked with Dr. Price for a short time when I was at Yale, and I strongly disagree with this assessment.

I remember Dr. Price being a warm, funny man, easygoing, but absolutely fastidious when it came to amassing evidence for research. I am convinced that any miscalcualtion on his part was the result of simple human error, rather than an attempt to "tweak" the facts. I only wish Dr. Price were here to defend himself.

I remember once, when we were working on my dissertation topic, a comparative study of Mayan vs. Southern India lunar calendars, Dr. Price insisted we run once again through the database of lunar phases for the years 100 - 146 C.E., even though we seemed to have hammered out every possible detail. I agreed, and as I turned to the terminal to set up the query, Dr. Price poured a plate of hot grits down my pants! They were moist and sticky.

...I mean, think about it. Rape is part of the natural order of things.

We all owe our existance to rape commited by our ancestors. The human race simply wouldn't have flourished if we'd waited for language and the concept of "consentual sex" to develop before engaging in sexual activities.

Let's try and be a little more sensitive to the natural inclinations towards fornication and procreation and stop viewing rape as evil. If there is a god, I'm sure he's in favor of rape. It's part of the human design, it's the way we're hardwired.

    So bend over, bitch.
