    Given that the story submitter is obviously the guy who posted it on ebay.

    Anyone want to buy a 'modded' 486.

    By modded I mean completely destroyed and useless. I found it in the loft of a place I moved into, gutted it for parts and burnt the remains.

      Yep, the guying posting is obviously no relation to the seller, and is not using this story as an attempt to drive up the final sale price of his item.

      The mod isn't even that impressive, seeing as we had a step-by-step guide posted a while back.
      And the fact that an ad (that is obvious to anyone) is being posted does little to help the journalistic integrity of /.

      This would be funny if it wasn't true. I never noticed that the AC submissions linked to the email address -- not very anonymous, now is it?

      I'm not one to complain about /. editors. I've been reading for about 4 of the 5 years, and it's been pretty consistent all the way -- an unprofessional, overgrown blog. But this takes the cake. This isn't just an ad -- Taco, you're a tool.

    I like the look of it, but I wouldn't want to run an Apple OS on it. If I bought it, I'd want to run Linux. How difficult is it to set Linux up on an iBook?

      Pretty easy. Kinda pointless imo. I have a nice IBM box hosted with linux on it, as well as a pretty decent desktop which dual boots win2k/debian. I did dual boot debian/macosx for a while but I ended up spending all my time in OS X anyway.

    Uh the eBay auction says it is simply "red paint", I don't see how "amazing" simply dismantaling an iBook and painting the inside with red glass paint is really that impressive. I think the draw on this guys auction is the fact he is including a large amount of "pre-installed" high end software (looks like at least 5 or 6 thousand in software, if not more), not the custom paintjob.

    A thing is translucent when it merely admits the passage of light, without enabling us to distinguish the outline of objects through it; it is transparent when we can clearly discern objects placed on the other side of it. Glass, water, etc., are transparent; ground glass is translucent.

    This case is transparent, not translucent. Details can be seen through it; the light is not diffused.

      Actually, the pre-installed software makes it a pretty cool deal...the Macromedia MX suite...Photoshop 7...Office X...Jaguar (it came with 10.0.3 preinstalled). The horrendous color is just an added bonus!

    It's funny that someone would be stupid enough to post a story about their own auction, and funnier still that the moderators would post it.

    What's not funny is that this guy is selling a bunch of "preinstalled" software with no CDs, which essentially is pirated software. I suspect that all of his serial numbers can be found in "Cracks & Numbers" or "Hackers Helper".

    This guy might want to be careful lest he end up in jail for grand theft (the value of the software listed is several thousand dollars).

      Nah. Ignoring the argument over common usage of the terms for the moment, legally, copyright infringment of software isn't theft, much less grand theft. Moreover, it certainly isn't going to get you sent to a maximum security prison.

      The other post about it was bogus.

      Though you're right...it's a bit ballsy trying to profit on illegal copies of something...the US judicial system really doesn't like it.

    A. This guy is just advertising on ./ when
    B. This kind of thing has been done many times before (see other posts). And on top of all of that
    C. He's including pirated "extra" software worth thousands of dollars.
    I know the ./ thing is to put up stories without detailed investigation, but c'mon! This is insane!

    Most modding leaves me wondering if there isn't a need to start a toll-free counseling hotline to talk the poor souls off the ledge and back into the building. There are some interesting exceptions, but come on -- there's a very good reason computer geeks aren't sought after as a class for their visual aesthetic. Pocket Protector 101, anyone?

    The current specimen is...kind of nice and translucent and red...like some sort of calcium-depleted hooker's nails. Two stars out of ten, and one of those is for being ballsy/stupid enough to "pre-install" a pile of software and advertise it here.
