Given that the story submitter is obviously the guy who posted it on ebay.

By modded I mean completely destroyed and useless. I found it in the loft of a place I moved into, gutted it for parts and burnt the remains.

I like the look of it, but I wouldn't want to run an Apple OS on it. If I bought it, I'd want to run Linux. How difficult is it to set Linux up on an iBook?
Well, its just a paint job. So why is this slashdot worthy? Maybe if he discussed the TYPE of paint used, as well as the process...

Uh the eBay auction says it is simply "red paint", I don't see how "amazing" simply dismantaling an iBook and painting the inside with red glass paint is really that impressive. I think the draw on this guys auction is the fact he is including a large amount of "pre-installed" high end software (looks like at least 5 or 6 thousand in software, if not more), not the custom paintjob.
I am confused? The Anonymous Coward link goes to the sellers email? Is this simply an shameless ad, if so why has it been posted?
i wish i could have this kind of publicity when selling my junk on ebay.
If you're going to call your own work "pretty incredible", you'd best remember to delete the e-mail address linking you to the work from the submission form...

A thing is translucent when it merely admits the passage of light, without enabling us to distinguish the outline of objects through it; it is transparent when we can clearly discern objects placed on the other side of it. Glass, water, etc., are transparent; ground glass is translucent.
This case is transparent, not translucent. Details can be seen through it; the light is not diffused.
Hey, I'm going to add $50 worth a spray paint to my $800 used iBook and that will immediately warrant $400 over the value of a used 500MhZ iBook.

It's funny that someone would be stupid enough to post a story about their own auction, and funnier still that the moderators would post it.
What's not funny is that this guy is selling a bunch of "preinstalled" software with no CDs, which essentially is pirated software. I suspect that all of his serial numbers can be found in "Cracks & Numbers" or "Hackers Helper".
This guy might want to be careful lest he end up in jail for grand theft (the value of the software listed is several thousand dollars).

C. He's including pirated "extra" software worth thousands of dollars.

The story itself is tragic. So is the computer. This looks just cheap. This is not beautiful, this is perverted. This is not about taste, it's ugly, period.

He's pulled the first auction because of an 'error' in the listing, and relisted it without the 'preinstalled' software. Funnily enough though, he's also removed things like iSync that are free downloads anyway.
Slashdot should, perhaps, be renamed "macdoc" or something. This is fucking lame.
