Doom Archive Reopened

Obiwan Kenobi writes "Computer game history buffs rejoice: Lee Killough's Doom Archive has been reopened at John Romero's site. Its been offline since 1998, when it was handed to Romero to look after, and has finally resurfaced. The info inside is priceless, if a bit Romero-centric, but who can deny the nostalgia of downloadable alpha versions, beta screenshots (complete with wild health meters) and the original Doom Press Release where the game tagline reads "Doom-the sanest place is behind a trigger.""

Will someone mod this as troll? The top post on that page clearly instructs visitors to go trolling around and posting the address everywhere. And it also mentions planning a big slashdot hoaxing as they put it. You'd think if they wanted to pull a big hoax they wouldn't be plastering the url of the main site for the hoax everywhere. Oh well who said trolls were smart?

Welcome to the Release Candidate 2 (RC2) release notes for the Microsoft Windows .NET Server 2003 family and Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003. This limited technical release will expire 360 days after it is installed.

These release notes contain important information that was not available when the documentation for the Windows .NET Server 2003 family was written.

Unless otherwise stated, all information included here applies to all of the products in the Windows .NET Server 2003 family. These products include:

Windows .NET Server 2003, Standard Edition
Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition
Windows .NET Server 2003, Web Edition
Some notes also apply to Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003. To determine which of these notes applies to your configuration, click the appropriate table of contents link earlier in this document.

In addition to this file, you should read several other release note files in the \Docs folder on your RC2 compact disc (CD):

    Read1st.txt contains important pre-installation information.
Setup text files contain important information you might need during installation.
A list of additional resources is included at the end of this document. To link to the Web sites referenced in this document, you must be connected to the Internet.

    Applications

    16-bit Applications
Products: Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003; Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (64-bit version only); Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (64-bit version only)

These products do not support most 16-bit applications.

Most applications that use 16-bit Microsoft ACME Setup versions 2.6, 3.0, 3.01, and 3.1 and InstallShield versions 5.x install correctly.

No 32-bit applications that are installed by 16-bit setup programs are supported. If you try to install one of these applications, the message "\Setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application" appears, and the application closes.

    32-bit device drivers
Products: Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003; Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (64-bit version only); Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (64-bit version only)

These products do not support 32-bit device drivers. Applications that provide 32-bit device drivers will not function correctly and might cause an error during installation or operation. Most 32-bit antivirus programs are affected and should not be installed on computers that are running 64-bit operating systems.

If Windows does not start after you attempt to install a 32-bit driver, start the computer using the last known good configuration as follows:

Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
Click Restart, and then click OK.
When the message "Please select the operating system to start" appears, press F8.
Press an arrow key to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
Press an arrow key to highlight an operating system, press ENTER, and follow the instructions.
    Note

Completing this procedure provides a way to recover from problems such as a newly added driver that is incorrect for your hardware. It does not solve problems caused by drivers or files that are corrupted or missing. When you start the computer using the last known good configuration, only the information in registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet is restored. Any changes you have made in other registry keys remain.

Internet Explorer and 32-bit Web components
Products: Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003; Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (64-bit version only); Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (64-bit version only)

The 64-bit version of Internet Explorer will not load 32-bit Web components, such as the MSN Money Ticker and Web components from companies other than Microsoft. To work around this issue, use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer.

To open the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer, click Start, click All Programs, and then click Internet Explorer (32-bit).

    Microsoft Content Management Server Setup
Products: Windows .NET Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit version only); Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (32-bit version only)

Before you install Content Management Server, enable Active Server Pages (ASP) as follows:

In Internet Information Services Manager, expand the local computer, and then click Web Service Extensions.
In the details pane, click Active Server Pages, and then click Allow.
If you do not enable ASP before you install Content Management Server, the installation will not complete correctly.

    Microsoft Agent
Products: Windows .NET Server 2003, Standard Edition, and Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit version only)

These products provide inbox support for Speech Application Programming Interface (SAPI) version 5.0 engines and programs. To avoid loss of functionality in Microsoft Agent applications that use SAPI version 4.0 speech input and/or output engines, you must install SAPI version 4.0a run-time support and then reinstall the SAPI version 4.0 speech engines, even if they were working with Microsoft Agent before you upgraded. To install SAPI version 4.0a run-time support, click here.

    Clustering

    Server Clusters
Products: Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit version only) and Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (32-bit version only)

A server cluster resource that is running an application that was not supplied by Microsoft fails to come online in a cluster when either:

Upgrading one node to a product in the Windows .NET Server 2003 family while at least one other node in the cluster is running Microsoft Windows 2000
Upgrading a cluster if a resource uses a cryptographic service provider (CSP) not supplied by Microsoft to encrypt and decrypt resource data written to the quorum log. In this case, the cluster and event logs might contain cryptographic synchronization errors.
To work around this issue, see article Q311799, "A Cluster Resource That Uses an External Cryptographic Provider Does Not Work If You Upgrade to Windows .NET Server 2003 family" in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on the Microsoft Web site.

    General

    Microsoft .NET Framework
Products: Windows .NET Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit version only); Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (32-bit version only)

If you upgrade these products from RC1 to RC2, and you run your applications using the .NET Framework 1.0, you must:

Remove the .NET Framework from the server after you upgrade to RC2. For more information, see article Q330046, "Upgrading Windows .NET Server 2003 family RC1 and the .NET Framework" on the Microsoft Web site.
Re-install the .NET Framework 1.0 from Microsoft Windows Update on the Microsoft Web site.
If you do not complete these steps, you will not be able to install any updates that might be released for the .NET Framework 1.0.

    Internet Services

    Internet Information Services 6.0
Products: Windows .NET Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition

To increase protection from malicious users and attackers, Internet Information Services (IIS) is not installed on members of the Windows .NET Server 2003 family by default. Furthermore, when you install IIS, the service is installed in a highly secure and locked mode, which means that, by default, IIS serves only static content. To learn how to unlock IIS features or to learn about other compatibility issues, see "Troubleshooting" in IIS 6.0 Help.

To serve dynamic content, you must enable features such as Active Server Pages (ASP), ASP.NET, server-side includes (SSI), Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV), and FrontPage Server Extensions by using IIS Manager. Also, you might need to map an application extension in IIS. For more information, see "Setting Application Mappings" in IIS 6.0 Help.

    UDDI Services
Products: Windows .NET Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows .NET Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit version only); Windows .NET Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (32-bit version only)

You can install UDDI Services database components only on Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later. Earlier versions of SQL Server 2000 are not supported.

    Network and Communications

    Use of TCP/IP protocol
IP version 6 (IPv6) environments are not supported in this release. Use of IPv4 and IPv6 on the same computer is required for full network connectivity.

After you install IPv6, you must restart the computer so that you can use remote procedure call (RPC) over IPv6. Until you restart the computer, it will continue to use IPv4.

Note: You do not need to restart RPC clients.
