17-inch flat-Panel iMac Dead
EnlightenmentFan writes "Apple plans to stop production in June of the iMac with flat-panel 17-inch display, according to this article at Asian tech-news site Digitimes. As with the now-history 15" flat-panel iMac, sales started strong but stalled once the early-adopter crowd had bought in. Probably-not-unrelated story (also posted today): Chungwha Picture Tubes is boosting the price of its 17-inch LCD monitor panels."
Upon initial reading of this story and thread I was saddened by the loss of another Mac line but now I have the strange urge to find an old fellow named Ike Thomas.

Everybody Chungwha tonight.

Let me give you a breakdown of this typical Slashdot post.
Step 1: Simply breeze through the summary posted on main page. Only pick up on key words that anger you. Think about kittens in a bag in the river while reading article if it helps elicit your rage.
Step 2: DO NOT READ LINKED ARTICLE. This may invalidate the arguement you are about to make. You obviously know more than what is written by some newsie writting a tech article anyway.
Step 3: State various opinions and hearsay as fact and general knowledge. Since most other posters will have follwed steps 1 and 2, you will simply be assumed as "in the know" and a credible source for information.
Step 4: Await praise and agreement by your minions.
Step 5: Instead, receive critism for spelling, logic, and obviously not reading the article before posting.
Step 6: Become irrate and ignore rest of thread. Instead, find first pro-Linux/anti-Microsoft thread to begin rant of "Fux0r buggah Micro$oft"
Repeat ad nasuem.
hey, when did Slashdot become yet another Mac rumors site? I must have been away for the holidays..

Well, the good news is that DC 37 (which the library employees of NYC will recognize as our union) is finally gathering up the sack to lobby for a 'no layoffs' guarantee from the city.
They're still not addressing the fact that we live in one of the two most expensive metro areas in the country, yet starting with salaries roughly $6k less than the New Jersey (that'd be the next state over) Library Association's recommended minimum, but you can't have everything.
But I digress. My real concern is this talk of tenure. Feel free to enlighten me if I've missed something, but in my 2+ years as a public librarian in NYC, I have heard exactly zilch about tenure, so I would recommend not getting your hopes up on that score.
Also, 20k in New York? Do you live in Bed-Stuy? Geez. I thought 30k was rough to live on.

Nice things are nicer than nasty ones.
Here's the lowdown on tenure: if you're salaried, and 90% of us are (I will be in a few weeks, or I'll be completely unemployed - I'm with ReCap till jan. 8th) after one year you are given tenure, basically meaning they can't fire you without cause and if you're current assignment ends they transfer you to another position. I'm pretty sure this is a union-only deal though I could be wrong. I'm certain it applies to LTA positions. I'll check up on it. :)
