  1. Actually no on Previewing ATi's Radeon X800 XT & X800 Pro · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was a die hard NVidia/Dell fan for years. Click, click I got my nice neat box in two days and watch as my roommates who built their boxes local with cards other than Nvidia chipset have problems. I quietly chortled in my dark room of Tribes while they rebooted.

But over the Christmas holiday, it finally came time to upgrade. I decided to save a few bucks (actually, this was more a mandate from the wife) and build the box myself. This actually meant that I had to do some research instead of the click and ship of my beloved Dell.

Cutting to the chase, I tried my hardest to find an Nvidia card that beat what most reviewers claimed was the cream of the crop, the ATI 9800XT. None really did. That, and I got a free version of HL2. Point, set and match.

I'm one of the converted. I will put my first list together of what I'm familiar with. Then, I'll do the research and see what's the best. The lists may not match, but I'm becoming geek enough to weigh loyalty vs what is best for me. Needless to say, I and the wife have been ecstatic with our little Shuttle/ATI monster and the extra couple hundred dollars in shoes. Respectively, of course :)

The problem with your solution, is that I have never given out my email other than a hand select few whom I trust. However, I am now receiving spam by the handful daily (though overthecounter anti-spam software has been next to perfect for filtering it out).

The problem is, that my email is somewhat generic with my first initial, last name, plus a numeric conditioner. This email was assigned by the provider. Unfortunately, many spammers, once they realize how emails are formatted for an ISP, can easily run through a list formatting it with the most common names and values. They will no doubtedly waste some emails to addresses that don't exist, but they also hit a large number of valid addresses without the use of a list.

So you must have a fairly unique address or creative provider. That, and somewhat lucky that your address hasn't gotten out yet. But it will, eventually.

  5. Re:wireless routers on RIAA Files 532 Lawsuits · · Score: 1

Um, your prosecutor must not have wanted to mess with you that day, because you got off easy.

Onto to the legal ease for neglect:

NEGLIGENCE - The failure to use reasonable care. The doing of something which a reasonably prudent person would not do, or the failure to do something which a reasonably prudent person would do under like circumstances. A departure from what an ordinary reasonable member of the community would do in the same community.

Negligence is a 'legal cause' of damage if it directly and in natural and continuous sequence produces or contributes substantially to producing such damage, so it can reasonably be said that if not for the negligence, the loss, injury or damage would not have occurred.

Negligence may be a legal cause of damage even though it operates in combination with the act of another, a natural cause, or some other cause if the other cause occurs at the same time as the negligence and if the negligence contributes substantially to producing such damage.

So in other words, you could have been found liable for not using reasonable care by leaving your keys in the car as a normal person wouldn't do this. Luckily it was probably only minor property damage and you reported it. Had you not reported it, and someone gotten killed, you more than likely could have been prosecuted. It would have been up to the judge to determine how neglegent you were.

Thus, this may be the standard of care that the RIAA uses to prosecute those allowing illegal file sharing over an open network. Had you monitored and secured the use of your network from illegal activity, none could have occured. But because you didn't, and a criminal act/harm resulted from it, you have partial responsibility.

The hacker defense does hold merit for the time being, but it has to be proven that your machine was compromised at the time the acts occured. Simply pleading you didn't know better to let your friends use your connection TO DOWNLOAD wouldn't hold much water when you probably did know they had illegal music from bandwidth logs and just living with the person.

  6. Re:wireless routers on RIAA Files 532 Lawsuits · · Score: 2, Insightful

You are responsible for all the actions that occur on your network and it is your responsibility to adequately provide security for your network. You cannot run an open network and not bear responsiblity for it's illegal use. It's called negligence, and I think people who are knowingly letting people use their networks for illegal means are going to be sharply bitten in the arse by in the courts. Feining ignorance isn't going to get you out of hot water.

For the same reason you can't leave the keys in your unlocked car that gets used by a drunk to kill someone because he knows he has easy access to your vehicle. You were criminally negligent, thus you bear some personal responsibilities. IANAL, but am married to one.

Yeah, they'll love Linux for that.

And I'm sorry, if you can't run XP without having to "reboot 4-5 times a week", then you either didn't install it correctly or have some error with your computer. I've installed XP on two different HD's, and have yet to reboot because of "lockups" and the such. For everyone in here having a little fit about "this is stupid" and "does this work" is falling into the whole genius of the marketing ploy. This isn't to persuade someone to buy the product, this is an effort to generate mass press for next to free (minus some self dignity). They are getting you to TALK ABOUT THEIR PRODUCT. Now you guys will run around to your fellow coworkers "Did you see the stupid Microsoft butterfly thing?". And they will tell another employee, who actually isn't technically savy, and might find it interesting, go look it up, and sign up for it. In effect, you, who disdain microsoft, are being used to help them secure customers.

Let's think about it, they have an entire article on slashdot, a pretty pro Linux group, to discuss the matter about them dressing up a bunch of people for a few bucks and putting them on rollerblades. But the old saying is true, the only bad press is no press at all. The IBM/LINUX graffiti thing proved that. They received TONS of press for just a few, inexpensive pictures of the Tux.

Actually there are a few misconceptions about the release: -There are two box sets currently available for order. The Robotech: The Macross Saga (DVD 1 and 2 + bonus DVD) and the Complete Macross Saga Collection. The Robotech series is the one that most children grew up watching here in the states, while the Macross Saga is the series that originally aired in Japan. Robotech is actually an adaptation of the Japanese version Macross, and the stories are slightly different (I won't ruin it with spoilers, BUT VERY DIFFERENT ENDING!) -The Robotech DVD's (put out by ADV) are completely UNREMASTERED (no remaster of video or audio). So all the original bad audio and film scratches are there. They are just flat copies from the original tape put together by Macek and Harmony Gold. These are English Dubbed with a few silly song clips in other languages (see here). - The Macross DVD's (put out by Animeigo) are completely REMASTERED (both video and audio). They are quite beautiful in the rework (see here). BIG DIFFERENCE. However, they will be released only in Japanese with English Subtitles. - Also, the entire Robotech Saga will run you close to $100 after tax. The entire Macross Saga will run you $250 if you preorder it. Yes, I'm a fan. The only man somewhat proud to have a Lisa Hayes 12" doll to keep him warm at night.
