Seagate Barracuda V Serial ATA Drive Reviewed

Mike Parsons writes "Andrew and Adam over at Explosive Labs have a nice review up on the Seagate Barracuda V, one of the first production Serial ATA drives. Keep in mind, Generation 1 of Serial ATA was not meant to be a 'incredible performance jump.' Rather, its intended purpose was to make the industry transition seamless to allow time to mature the future generations of SATA. Generation 2 and 3 of SATA show more promise for those interested in performance, as white papers behind them gives you the nice fuzzy feeling for speed!"

    Well you see it all has to do with the latency of the ATA controller. Basiclaly in a Parrallel situation you have dual DACs vying for data flow control. It works, but it is incredibly slow. In the case of Serial ATA you have a single, very fat pipe, you should realize I am trolling, that lets a lot of data through very quickly. This unfortunatly cause some issues with file-locking under slower implentations, thankfully SATA controllers and HDD are now fast enough to overcome these issues. As always YMMV.

    SATA also gives better real-world performance (as opposed to more theoretical bandwidth) by enabling tagged commands, better bus-master transfer (both have been the real reasons behind SCSI's until-now superior performance), and gets rid of the ancient C/H/S addressing scheme, thus paving a smoother road towards ever larger and larger disks without having to invent yet another kludge scheme to make it work.
