Linus to Attend Linux.conf.au 2003

Also attending are 'an impressive list of international open source legends, such as kernel guru Alan Cox, PHP developer Rasmus Lerdorf, and Slashdot's Jeff "Hemos" Bates, Australians Paul "Rusty" Russell and SAMBA pioneer Andrew Tridgell will also be speaking.' And yes, tickets are already sold out."

    I mean, the majority of the Australian population is in Melbourne or Sydney, and Perth is on the opposite side of the continent...

    I know I'd have attended if it were on the east coast, but I'm not about to fork out for plane tickets to get to the west...

      Your loss. Seriously. Speaking as a born and bred Sydney-sider (Australian east coast, for the geographically-challenged), I really enjoyed both of my trips to Western Australia (once for business, once for pleasure).

      If conferences were only ever located where the highest concentration of the population lived, then you'd never see a conference held in Australia that wasn't in Sydney.

      Don't be so insular - take a look around this country that we love (same goes for anyone else - have a look around your own country and marvel at its own beauty).

      I was once in New York (USA) and on the way to JFK airport the driver mentioned that he had lived in New York State all his life and hadn't seen or visited half the things I had done in a matter of weeks - the same story could be told anywhere in the world.

      Because that is where we decided to hold it. 2002 was in Brisbane, 2001 was in Sydney and CALU was held in Melbourne. It will be somewhere else next year.

      Many Western Australians would have had the same reason for not going to previous conferences, so holding the odd conference over here is a good idea.

      It is too bad you can't make it though, because it is going to be a great conference :)

      Or Melbourne. And yes, usually conferences are held in one of those two. Travelling between those two by air is reasonably cheap and quick, and by car is feasible (at 'only' 10 hours) and dirt cheap. Well, compared to the cost and time of travelling either air or car from Sydney/Melbourne to Perth anyway.

      There's a difference between being insular, and not being able to afford either the time or the money to travel across the country and back right now. Both post and undergraduate uni offers came out in the last week, which makes finding time (and the money!) to get across our sunburnt country a bit difficult...

      Trust me, travelling to Perth has been high on my "to do" list for quite a few years now. It's just a little bit of time and a whole lot of money issues stopping me for the time being...

      The fact that you think that the whole of Australia should revolve around Sydney and Melbourne is really sad.

      The conference was excellent and you really missed out!

    Does anyone have any clue why it's in Perth? That is literally as far away as you can get from the main population centers and still be on the Island. What on earth is the motive for this? If it was held in Darling Harbour exhibition centre or Homebush, many people I know (including me) would go.

      It's a roaming conference, you wanker! The Sydney conference (the first called 'linux.conf.au') was held in 2001.

    I get to attend (not to mention organise).

    WA's a great state, it makes naff-all difference to the price of international tickets, the state is a beautiful place to be, and Linus is coming - so shove it up your nose! (-:

    Last year's Linux.conf.au was great - This is Greater!

    The collections of speakers are excellent *Especially Rusty* and it's like cyber-heaven to have Linus just hanging with the rest of us.

    Even the weather is better than expected.
