Good News For Creating Quicktime On Linux

An anonymous reader writes "It's now possible to capture DV Quicktime files in Linux, splitting automatically at any predetermined size, and seamless importing the files to Windows (may be possible with Macs too but I don't have one to test with). The new version of Kino is out and it supports Quicktime." This requires that you specifically configure Kino to handle QuickTime, at least in this version. Read on below for a few notes about the submitter's experience with Kino, Cinelerra, Cinestream and other A/V editing tools.

"I've been finding Kino handy for capturing from VHS and Hi-8 because the auto-split avoids sync issues with large files. Cinestream (Windows NLE) can't seem to keep long captures in sync when I use my Sony DVMC-DA1 box but capturing in Kino has been a simple un-attended workaround. Now that it captures in Quicktime, it's even better because I can feed the Quicktime files directly to Cinestream with no pre-processing, and the quality is very good.

If you also install Cinelerra, you can also view some types of Quicktime in Linux. Cinelerra is an awesome multi-track NLE with several supplied effects/transitions/filters, but it also includes "X movie," which plays DV files captured with Cinestream as well as some other types (but nothing with Sorenson).

Both Cinelerra and Kino can open and edit Quicktime files from Cinestream.

Oh, what about audio? I've been trying a program called " Ardour" which is a real-time 24-track hard-disk recorder on Linux. Of course it's useful for "simpler" things too like a precision audio editor.

Check out the screenshots.

So Linux is coming a long way as a viable platform for high-quality editing (with nice interfaces too). And since it and the apps are free, that goes a long way. Microsoft said in a recent filing that it may be forced to lower prices due to competition from free software. Maybe one day the only people who pay for an editing package will be those who need support or buy it preconfigured with hardware."

The facts are that most people just don't understand linux, and can't tell the difference between honest differences of opinion and outright FUD about Linux. Consider this gem that I discovered (still not sure who is behind it) - note the deliberate misinformation about free software (which they call "radical"):

    Linux Myths & Facts

Suddenly linux has become a hot topic. As a parent, this makes it difficult to instill in your teen that the use of linux is still dangerous and illegal. This column is not going to debate the issues over hacking linux, but rather give you myths, facts and information to assist you in talking to your teen about using linux.

    Myth: Linux is not addictive.

Fact: Linux contains "free radical programs" (FRP), that produce the relaxed "good feeling" also known as hacking. Often, users build up a tolerance to FRP. The build up of this tolerance requires users to hack more frequently and in higher quantities.

Myth: Linux does not impair a person.

Fact: False! FRP can produce short-term memory loss and cause an inability to make quick decisions and use good judgment. Other effects of linux include paranoia, anxiety attacks and impaired hygeine. Mixing linux and masterbation further diminishes the central nervous system, seriously impeding a person's ability to make decisions and utilize a rational thought process.

Myth: Linux does not lead to hard-core pornography

Fact: Linux is also referred to as gateway pornography, which is pornography people are first exposed to and experiment with. Linux does not always lead to the use of harder pornography, but most hard-core pornography users admit their addiction started by casually using linux. According to a 1996 report published by the "National Household Surveys on Pornography Abuse," adolescents ranging in age from 12 to 17 using linux on a weekly basis were 9 times more likely to use illicit pornography than non-linux users.

Myth: Linux use does not lead to other types of delinquency.

Fact: According to the "Adolescent Self-Reported Behaviors and their Association with Linux Use" study conducted by the Computer Abuse and Hygeine Services Administration, teens using linux on a frequent basis had a higher rate of running away, theft, truancy, drug dealing, drunk driving and thoughts of suicide, compared to teens not using linux.

Myth: Linux does not cause lasting health problems.

Fact: Research indicates linux users have a greater risk of developing body odor and unkempt appearance problems similar to long-term LISP programmers. Researchers are also studying the effects of linux on chromosomes and reproductive organs, but have not been able to find any linux hackers who have ever had sex.

As a parent, it's important that you talk with your child about all types of computer abuse. Arming yourself with facts and information will make your conversations easier and more insightful for your teen. Remember, if you don't talk to your teen about linux, someone else will and it may not necessarily be a person who is clean.

To all of my friends, I do not usually forward messages, but this is from my good friend Pearlas Sanborn and she really is an attorney.

If she says that this will work - it WILL work. After all, what have you got to lose?
SORRY EVERYBODY..JUST HAD TO TAKE THE CHANCE!!!
I'm an attorney, and I know the law. This thing is for real.
Rest assured AOL and Intel will follow through with their promises for fear of facing a multimillion-dollar class action suit similar to the one filed by PepsiCo against General Electric not too long ago.

    Dear Friends,
Please do not take this for a junk letter. Bill Gates is sharing his fortune. If you ignore this you will repent later. Microsoft and AOL are now the largest Internet companies and in an effort to make sure that Internet Explorer remains the most widely used program, Microsoft and AOL are running an e-mail beta test.

When you forward this e-mail to friends, Microsoft can and will track it (if you are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two week time period.

For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you $245.00, for every person that you sent it to that forwards it on, Microsoft will pay you $243.00 and for every third person that receives it, you will be paid $241.00. Within two weeks, Microsoft will contact you for your address and then send you a cheque.

I thought this was a scam myself, but two weeks after receiving this e-mail and forwarding it on, Microsoft contacted me for my address and within days, I received a cheque for US$24,800.00. You need to respond before the beta testing is over. If anyone can afford this Bill Gates is the man.

It's all marketing expense to him. Please forward this to as many people as possible.
You are bound to get at least US$10,000.00.
We're not going to help them out with their e-mail beta test without getting a little something for our time. My brother's girlfriend got in on this a few months ago. When I went to visit him for the Baylor/UT game.

She showed me her check. It was for the sum of $4,324.44 and was stamped "Paid In Full".

Like I said before, I know the law, and this is for real

Intel and AOL are now discussing a merger which would make them the largest Internet company and in an effort make sure that AOL remains the most widely used program, Intel and AOL are running an e-mail beta test.

When you forward this e-mail to friends, Intel can and will track it (if you are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two week time period.

For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you $203.15.
For every person that you sent it to that forwards it on, Microsoft will pay you $156.29
And for every third person that receives it, you will be paid $17.65.
Within two weeks, Intel will contact you for your address and then send you a check.
I thought this was a scam myself, but a friend of my good friend's Aunt Patricia, who works at Intel, actually got a check of $4,54323 by forwarding this e-mail.

Try it; what have you got to lose????
