NASA Gives Up On Pioneer 10

Soft writes "Another Energizer Bunny has finally given out: Pioneer 10's generators have decayed to the point that DSN can no longer detect the probe's signals. It was the first spacecraft to penetrate the asteroid belt (1972) and fly by Jupiter (1973). So long and thanks for all the pic's..."

Your ignorance amuses me. For one, black urban culture is not due to genetic inferiority. It is based on cultural inferiority. You see, if you had a culture where attempting to succeed at something landed you ridicule and even assault, while at the same time being told from every direction from your peers that the "man" would keep you down even if you did succeed, I would think you'd be messed up as well.
What really upsets me is the fact that it's no longer primarily society keeping them from succeeding, it's the culture instilled by their peers doing the job.
Outside of urban areas one rarely sees the ignorant speech patterns you refer to. In the suburbs we find those blacks who refused to accept the "truth" their brethren sought to provide them with. These people are generally scorned as "not black enough" by those who doggedly remained in areas that had no chance of providing them with a decent wage.
Of those blacks I have worked with in technical areas, I have found surprising levels of intelligence and competency. You don't see them on UPN because smart, succesful blacks are just less entertaining than our modern blackface minstrel shows that people like Martin Lawrence are only so happy to provide. Once the black urban "culture" is completely abandoned as an inferior path, the U.S. (as that is the only place such a culture exists) will finally show the fruits of the equal opportunity laws we've fought so hard to get.
The other real problem is people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. By constantly providing frightening accounts of (questionable) racist bias, they seek to perpetuate the industry they created in the 1960s. It was a worthwhile endeavor then, but is now somewhat redundant. They know that, and have elected to defend rioting students at football games who are expelled, alleging racism when no convincing evidence supporting it are shown.
I say this here because for reasons beyond my control, I will be branded a racist for even suggesting that the largest oppressor of blacks in these United States is other blacks. I will be called a hatemonger for caring that their leadership is steering their lives to failure. They would attempt to brand me a Klansman for even suggesting these things openly. Sadly, this kind of analysis is exactly what is needed in order for them to leave that system. No amount of liberal white guilt and freebie programs will salve the problems. No pity can save them from their peers. And it's a pity because I have known quite a few intelligent black men who suddenly switch to ebonics and profanity when faced with the scorn of their fellows. over 70% now have no fathers to guide them in life. There are the roots of their poverty. As a white guy, I am powerless because I can't say the things that they need to hear. And if I do, I will lose friends. Sorry about the long missive, but this is slashdot.
Oh, and I'm a republican. Just so you know, I voted for Keyes in the last primary. Then I heard more of his views, and discovered I wasn't quite ready to send him to the White House. Maybe I should have been, all things considered. (although pr0n would now be banned).

So what happened during your life?

I was on the IRC talking to a guy in Berlin from my Massachusetts college library when he told me "they're getting ready to take the wall down."

Two days went by before it was on CNN.

When we're old and gray, hopefully we'll all know the magnificance of the times we lived in.

Yes, I know this is OT.

Personally, I believe that NASA is going to "throw away" this Pioneer 10 because of all the problems they've been having. Now, they'll have to convince Congress and the people of the United States that space exploration is a worthwhile objective and that they should continue to receive infinity dollars and forty five cents every year to continue the space program. As part of that process, and in order to help convince the aforementioned folks that they should continue to receive the aforementioned dinero (that's French for money), they're going to close down projects that have yielded little or no excitement over the past few years, potentially putting more resources, as well as efforts, into performing objectives that do create excitement among the American people.

This post is not off topic, I swear to Dios. The second paragraph contains a bunch of shit, but the first contains useful information. The first paragraph begins here: I just love it when some huge Microsoft ad comes up when I load up a story. Astute readers probably know that I hate Microsoft's guts and that I firmly believe that everything they are/sell/do/say is pure garbage. So when I see one of their ads on Slashdot, I click on it and when their ugly webpage finishes to load, I simply hit the 'back' button. I never look at what they're advertising. Even if I did, I would certainly not be interested in it, whatever it is, because I use products that are in every way superior to theirs. Products like six different distributions of Linux, all three BSDs, versions of BeOS ranging from 3 to 5 (because it's still useful), QNX, IRIX and HP-UX. There were others, but I reduced the list of operating systems to the ones listed here. So Microsoft has to pay for another click that led them nowhere. And I wasted some of their bandwidth. These two facts make me feel good about myself and about who I am. I firmly believe that causing them additional expenses such as the one described herein is a good way to increase one's self esteem (not that I need to do so, what with the 6 different girlfriends I have that don't know about each other, and would probably still love/screw me if they knew, since I am such a studmuffin, so yeah, I have lots of self esteem... girls love guys that troll Slashdot). Now, to what I was going to say about this article before that stupid ad got in my way... Oh, that was in the first paragraph... sorry, forgot.

Actually, I was going to stop here but I think I'll add more...

Since Pioneed 10 is headed straight for Alderban something or other in the Taurus universe, just point your anteneass in that way.

Until there's a kernel slashbox I thik slashdot is EXACTLY the place new kernels should be advertised. The kernel benefits from people testing it, and advertising direct to millions of geeks that their favorite chunk of code has been updated is a great way to get more testing done on it. Also, when a lot of people are running nasty kernels that have big bugs it's important to let the community know that fixes are available.

There oughtta be a slashbox though, or an option to disable kernel announcements.
