You're correct on all counts. The sad thing is, Microsoft had a software OpenGL implementation since the dawn of time and really the only reason Direct3D exists is because of GLIDE. If 3dfx had just done MiniGL from the beginning instead of creating their own 3D API then Microsoft would likely have stuck with OpenGL instead of creating their own (Crappy) 3D graphics API.
