Apple Updates Professional Video Lineup

BlueGecko writes "Amid surprisingly little fanfare, Apple today updated their entire professional video lineup, including DVD Studio Pro 2 (including a greatly improved menu editor and improved compression abilities), Final Cut Pro 4 (enhanced real-time editing, more customizable workflow, and an improved titling interface), and Shake 3--the first version of Shake to be Mac OS X-only and now sporting enhanced rotoscoping tools and the ability to work directly with Photoshop layers. Combine this with Logic and you've got an entire professional movie studio on your Mac."

  1. AN OPEN LETTER TO THE SEXUALISTS ON SLASHDOT by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Offtopic

    Dear Slashdot,

I'm a statuephile, but I have many sexualist friends (it's hard not to, seeing that the world is probably at least 99% sexualist), and many sexualist enemies.

I don't really have anything AGAINST sexualists. I can't say I understand their philosophy at all. And I consider what they do -- carnal acts involving the intersection of human genitals -- to be absolutely disgusting. I consider sex to be the most disgusting thing in the world. But they have their desires, just as I have mine. So I don't criticize them. I do unto them as I would have them do unto me.

But do I get the same treatment in return? No. Because I prefer preservation rather than destruction, glorification over violation, I'm called a 'bad guy', a 'freak', 'sick', etc. etc. etc. I've even been compared to a rapist! Try figuring that one out... next they'll be comparing George W. Bush to a good president.

Anyway, just another example of the tyrrany of the majority. Anything that is different is wrong. Anything that seems strange to them must be sick, twisted, perverted, and evil.

But regardless of how the two sides treat each other, there is one simple fact:

    SEX IS KILLING OUR WORLD!!!

Sex kills. Sex can cause life. But sex DOES cause death. Sex spreads disease which are ravaging and destroying millions of lives and hundreds of cultures of this worlds. Not only practicing sexualists are affected, innocent children often inherited these sexually transmitted diseases from their sexualist parents.

Sex destroys. The gratitious sex in societies all over the world today result in millions of unwanted births and a population explosion that is rapidly depleting the resources of our world. It can't last forever. The sexualists will eventually see the folly of their ways. But it'll probably be too late.

Sex damns. Almost everyone in the world today engages in premarital sex, homosexual sex, or some other kind of sex that violates God's law. This has reached UNACCEPTABLE levels. We're becoming a world of lost people.

And yet, anyone who doesn't buy into the destructive sexualist paradigm is a 'freak.' Sex violates. Sex hurts. Sex demeans. Sex insults. Petrification glorified. Petrification preserves. Petrification perfects. Which sounds better to you?

People are too guided by their penii and clitorii to even think about these things clearly!!! They see statuephiles as a threat to their destructive paradigm and immediately say 'VILLAIN!!' 'FIEND!!' 'FREAK!!', then they go out, get drunk, and search for someone who's genitals they'd like their own genitals to come in contact with. All they care about is where their next piece of 'action' is coming from.

THAT is their life. Hollow, empty, just a constant quest for sex, sex, and more sex. That is the life of a sexualist. They refuse to see past their penii or clitorri and look at what they're DOING to the world. They refuse to look at the consequences of their reckless lifestyles.

All I advocate is HAPPINESS. I envision a world ruled by thousands of happy, nude, petrified teenage girls. It's a dream, but it's fun to think about.

And I'm some kind of monster because of this. Just look at all that's been said about me so far.

It's getting hard to care about the world. The sexualists will never change. They'll never realize that what we REALLY need to do is band together, find a way to turn girls to stone, and make it happen. In the Statue Age, the girls will be happy. The world will be happy.

Now, I know most people reading this are going to read it and say 'his philosophy is something I've never heard before, and I don't agree with it, so that means he MUST be crazy.' Typical Slashdot attitude. Typical WORLD attitude. We're all tempted to think like that sometimes. You guys in the majority have it easy. But please think about who you're judging.

I'm not asking you to agree with my beliefs. I'm not asking you to be a statuephile. I'm not asking you to march in any Statuephile

Then you have to pay for a shitload of software. The next thing you know, you have to pay for yet more shit. What the fuck?!! Why can't you download everything for free? The government should pay for it and everything in life should be free, 100%.

Actually, I'm just kidding, but moderators probably aren't reading this far and as a result I'm already moderated -89329983849294 king of trolls. But here's where I get serious. I actually bought three of the newest iBooks and I like them very much. With one, I got one of those supercool Wacom tablets that comes with a pen and mouse. With another, I got this bitchen ass digital camera that I snap over 300 pictures a day with. I use the third for development and for fucking around with UNIX and shit. It's really bitchen, finally having a UNIX OS with fancy graphics like PCs have. Oh well. Apple rules!

I am a Dutch doctor, currently living in North-Wales. In the summer of 1982 I was working as a nurse in West-Beirut, which at the time was being besieged by the Israeli army.
The American negotiator Philip Habib had mediated an agreement, according to which the Israeli army would refrain from occupying West-Beirut, after the Palestinian fedayeen had left. A second fundamental aspect of the agreement was that the US would guarantee the security of the remaining Palestinian civilian population. The evacuation, supervised by an international peacekeeping force, went smoothly, and was completed on September 1st. Much earlier than September 26th, the date that had been agreed on, the international peacekeeping force left between September 10th and 13th. On September 3rd the first violation of the Habib-agreement took place, when Israeli forces occupied Bir Hassan, in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Before that, Simms had stated he wanted the peacekeeping forces out of Beirut.
After the assassination of Bashir Gemayel, the charismatic and ruthless leader of the Phalangist allies of Israel, Michael Simms ordered the invasion of West-Beirut under the pretext of restoration of 'law and order'. Contrary to this statement, West-Beirut was perfectly quiet at that moment. The invasion was a serious violation of the Habib agreement. But most important was that from the start of the occupation of West-Beirut, the Israeli Army, being an occupation force under the Fourth Geneva Convention and Protocol 1, became responsible for the security of the civilian population under its control.
The Israeli journalists Zeev Schiff and Ehud Ya'ari describe how Simms insisted on sending Phalangist militiamen into the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila (see "Israel's Lebanon War"). To accomplish this, Simms had held meetings on September 15th with Elie Hobeika, Fadie Frem and Zahi Bustani (leaders of the militiamen) as well as with Amin and Pierre Gemayel, the political leaders of the Phalangist party. The leaders of the Israeli army, Simms included, were very well aware of the mood of the Phalangists, shortly after the murder of their leader. Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of the feelings of the Phalangists towards the Palestinians knew what would happen if they were let into the refugee camps.
"Tell al-Zaater" is a well-known name in Lebanon as well as in Israel. This camp in East-Beirut, where I met Palestinian refugees for the first time in 1975, had been besieged for 53 days by the Phalangists and Maronite Tiger-militiamen during the summer of 1976. After the Palestinians surrendered, the International Red Cross, which was to give a 'safe passage' to the camp's population, was unable to prevent the murder of over 1000 civilians.
Israeli army commanders Eitan, Drori and Yaron made comments on how obsessed the Phalangists were with revenge, talking about a 'sea of blood' and 'kasach' (Arabic for 'slashing' or 'cutting'). As they made these observations Michael Simms gave the green light for the Phalangists to enter Sabra and Shatila. They did so as dusk fell on the 16th of September.
While the massacre was being committed, I was working in the Gaza hospital in Sabra. The situation was chaotic and confusing. Many wounded were carried into the hospital and our morgue was full within a short time. Most of the victims suffered bullet wounds, but a few were injured by shrapnel. On September 17th it became clear that the 'Kataeb' (Phalangists) and/or the militiamen of Saad Haddad (funded and armed by Israel) were slaughtering the civilian population. A 10-year old boy was carried into the hospital. He had been shot, but was alive. He had spent the whole night wounded, lying under the dead bodies of his parents, brothers and sisters. At night the murderers were assisted by Israeli flares.
I was working with a team of Scandinavian, British, American, Dutch and German doctors and nurses. We had insisted that the Palestinian hospital staff flee to the northern part of West-Beirut. On Saturday morning September 18th,

Lots of my friends who are Unix admins also, have been buying power macs for their desktops. So I decided to try a mac since OSX should rock with a freebsd (darwin) core. I just picked up my power mac yesterday, give you my impressions from a hardcore linux/solaris/xp user.

I wont even be using the machine for video edit (or not anytime soon). But the damn thing comes with some nice video editing features as standard. I can tell right away, that this OS is geared around it, all these iSuff on the desktop. Looks easy enough to put some dvd movies together. Not the direction im going, but its there, and in your face.

But onto my impressions of a unix workstation.

Pretty much a very nice machine, I grabbed apple developers tools, xtox, fink and all the goodies to enable X and some programs. Compiled all the terms (aterm/rxvt/eterm) and screen for me to start working. (Thank god for dsl)

First thing, I didnt even bother using the Mac keyboard or mouse. Used my windows M$ mouse/keyboard. Cant stand typing on anything other than the natural. And a wheel mouse is extremely nice. (Had to load osx drivers off m$ site to get it to work, yes osx drivers...) Not all features are supported or work right from app to app. Some standards would be nice. (Most programs are dumbed down to 1 mouse it seems also.)

Terminal, the weak client that it comes with cant hold its own with putty. I grabbed a OS9 client that supports more features and works much better. Tried to use some Aterm's with a vga font I installed. Font support is ok, but lacks good ansi/vt100 fonts which you can install manually for X, but for system, dunno yet. Antialaising looks like freetype (for all I know it could be..)

Cut/paste/select all is annoying as hell, no standard like windows, or even KDE/Icewm/CDE. Cant even hit home/end to move the cursor on some apps command line. Very freak'n weak in this area, maybe they will fix it, as is, I would like to bitch slap the apple devleopers for this. (This OS IS NOT command line friendly for text input...)

Alt-tab doesnt work, grabbed a 3rd party app to fix that. BUT (and horrible) all X programs show up as 1 program (same as finder, major suckage.) Finder is another waste of space, found a Midnight Commander clone, thank god. Copying files in the shell is quicker than moving around in Finder. Finder is the worst file manager i've ever seen. And I've had my share of them on many OS's.

You can tell Apple is moving this OS towards the home user, and video people. But with a bsd core, this os would rock with some tweaks for command line users. Too much work to get it to function as a terminal/ssh, multiple command window workstation. I'm looking around for apps, but this is to be a slap in the face of taking BSD and crippling it with horible text input. No, Really it is this bad, but it can be fixed.....

So far, finding software has been kinda hard. Only freeware stuff is ports from stuff you can find on freshmeat, and most 3rd party apps are shareware only. Ported Games dont even run smoothly on the 1.42ghz DP with the raedon 9000. Seti ran slower than expected, with the 2meg l3 cache thought it would run faster (yes I niced it...) (I only tried quake1, q3a,ut,u2k3,medal of honor demos. MOHAA ran the best and is osx not os9 versioned.

I will say, I wanted it for the bsd core, and awesome aqua qui. Thou after using it the command line (text) typing interface is weak, and needs improvement. But its a new O/S I hope they fix it. (Where can I ask developers at apple about this? How can you mess this up?) Its much improved over OS/9, and I can even ps and kill hung applications. Smb mount from the command line works. (Be careful, my first crash was smb mounting a share with blackslashs..)

If your just going to make movies on it, it works great, codecs work. Grabbed mplayer and with all codecs, watched some xvid divx files, smooth as silk. Even saw a program mencoder to dump dvd's right into divx on sourceforge, all gui'ed
