FoxPro On Linux, Drama Ensues
bltfast32 writes "I don't know how many people have been following this, but this is definitely worth keeping an eye on. Whil Hentzen, prominent FoxPro and Linux advocate, has received some heat lately for publishing a HOWTO in the March 2003 FoxTalk issue for running Visual FoxPro 8.0 on Linux with WINE. Of course, the aforementioned heat, is coming from Redmond. Here is a link to a nice summary of the interactions by Whil." That summary mentions the Register article online here. bltfast32 also points to another article which requires registration.
One was for his wife. So far so good.
The other was for his child. Which was still in the womb of its mother at the time of Scott's choice to get rid of them. So, does this mean that killing an unborn child is now officially considered to be murder?
Why would you want to run FoxPro at all, let alone on Linux. Gah.
In the former Soviet Russia and the current USA, you could never be too paranoid.
The simpler solution would have been to raise insurance rates for car drivers. Personally, I don't remember giving insurance companies the power to legislate.
I'm sorry guys, but FoxPro completely smokes SQL Server and MySQL on datasets 2Gb.
Don't believe me? Try doing the following:
1. Take one 1.5Gb comma delimited text file
2. Load into preferred database program
3. Run a simple sort and output the results to another file.
Part 2 will take you AGES on SQL/DBase server as it has to muck about indexing and creating columns. On a fairly fast machine FoxPro will do all of the above in under 10 minutes.
No wonder Microsoft tried to kill the thing if its flagship products (SQL Server) performance is constantly beaten by software that hasn't changed much for over 15 years. Also remember, FoxPro wasn't originally written by Microsoft (ala Visio) - this was back in the embrace and extend days.
