Max Payne Live-Action Short Movie Completed
potaz writes "3D Realms is reporting that an officially-sanctioned Max Payne short movie has been completed. It's a student project called "Max Payne: Hero" and is available - complete - for download from maxpaynehero.com." While we're waiting for the next Max Payne game installment (and, indeed, the next game from his friend Duke), this seems like a neat way to wile away the time.

I'll be graduating from the 3 year Film & Television program from Humber College. Although I have directed many different genres while attending this school, my heart has always been in making action movies. Where did I get this idea? I was on a trip and I was in the backseat of a car listening to my tunes when I started to see these images as I listened to the song "Hero" by Chad Kroeger & Josey Scott. To me, this song made me feel a wide range of emotions such as anger, sorrow, frustration, and closure. As a film student at Humber College, I mainly liked to direct action movies. Some gun shooting sequences appeared in my mind as I heard this song. As I listened to it more, I pictured a whole choreographed scene and I thought that this would make a very cool action-packed music video. But I wasn't too sure about how I was going to end it. I had two choices. I was going to have it so the hero would go in and raise some hell and save his girlfriend/wife or his girlfriend/wife is already dead and he avenges her death. The latter reminded me of Max Payne and I thought that this is the perfect way to give tribute to one of my most favorites games, Max Payne, and one of my most favorite directors, John Woo. Since the developers of Max Payne really likes John Woo movies, I thought that this is the right company to give thanks to as they have done a great job on creating an action-filled John Woo style video game. Pre-Production I began to develop the screenplay storyline as it was only going to last a little over three minutes long and figure out what action sequences I would want to have. Once that was taken care of, I decided to look for companies that can do pyrotechnics as well as have guns that fire blanks. I thought "Who better than the same team that worked on John Woo's Once A Thief television series?" I talked to BFX and Movie Armaments Group about my project and what I wanted to accomplish. We discussed a few things and came up with a quote. Since I was a student, they knew my financial predicament so they gave me a good price and I was on my way. Production With the help of more than ten final year film students, nine industry professionals, and eight experienced actors, I was able to shoot this three minutes piece within four days at an average of twelve hours per day. Since a major portion of my budget was going towards special effects, there wasn't enough money to do two takes on most shots. Any shot that involved something like a box being blown to bits was done on one take only. We would rehearse it a few times before we'd get our Super16mm camera rolling. One shot in particular was a little nerve racking. It involved a lot of pyrotechnics and a dolly. This means more variables to work with, a better chance of something going wrong, and that it can only be one take. There were suggestions on changing the shot or faking it but my heart was to go and try it because I was confident that it can work and I believe it did. In the end, I hope my tribute is satisfying enough for fellow Max Payne and John Woo fans until Max Payne 2 comes out later this year. I also hope that this Short/Music Video is my stepping stone for future projects as I plan to make more films & music videos when I can ...
FWIW, FileShack hasn't sent me any emails. Unfortunately, I can't be sure whether they've sold it to anyone else or not.
