Max Payne Live-Action Short Movie Completed
potaz writes "3D Realms is reporting that an officially-sanctioned Max Payne short movie has been completed. It's a student project called "Max Payne: Hero" and is available - complete - for download from maxpaynehero.com." While we're waiting for the next Max Payne game installment (and, indeed, the next game from his friend Duke), this seems like a neat way to wile away the time.
What's the appeal?
Granted, I only played the game for a few hours but there was little more substance than found in a hackneyed detective story.
The same can be said about Duke Nukem. Why make a movie?
If you could be anything you want, I'll bet you'd be disappointed.
Now it will be good and slashdotted for the next few days. And I can't even try to get it until I get home. If someone nabs it and has extra bandwidth, post a mirror!
Good quote, too many chars. Seriously, the slashdot 120 char limit sucks!
Anybody got a .torrent set up yet? Or kazaa, gnutella, or something else that doesn't require a login, long wait times, and slow download speeds?

I'll be graduating from the 3 year Film & Television program from Humber College. Although I have directed many different genres while attending this school, my heart has always been in making action movies. Where did I get this idea? I was on a trip and I was in the backseat of a car listening to my tunes when I started to see these images as I listened to the song "Hero" by Chad Kroeger & Josey Scott. To me, this song made me feel a wide range of emotions such as anger, sorrow, frustration, and closure. As a film student at Humber College, I mainly liked to direct action movies. Some gun shooting sequences appeared in my mind as I heard this song. As I listened to it more, I pictured a whole choreographed scene and I thought that this would make a very cool action-packed music video. But I wasn't too sure about how I was going to end it. I had two choices. I was going to have it so the hero would go in and raise some hell and save his girlfriend/wife or his girlfriend/wife is already dead and he avenges her death. The latter reminded me of Max Payne and I thought that this is the perfect way to give tribute to one of my most favorites games, Max Payne, and one of my most favorite directors, John Woo. Since the developers of Max Payne really likes John Woo movies, I thought that this is the right company to give thanks to as they have done a great job on creating an action-filled John Woo style video game. Pre-Production I began to develop the screenplay storyline as it was only going to last a little over three minutes long and figure out what action sequences I would want to have. Once that was taken care of, I decided to look for companies that can do pyrotechnics as well as have guns that fire blanks. I thought "Who better than the same team that worked on John Woo's Once A Thief television series?" I talked to BFX and Movie Armaments Group about my project and what I wanted to accomplish. We discussed a few things and came up with a quote. Since I was a student, they knew my financial predicament so they gave me a good price and I was on my way. Production With the help of more than ten final year film students, nine industry professionals, and eight experienced actors, I was able to shoot this three minutes piece within four days at an average of twelve hours per day. Since a major portion of my budget was going towards special effects, there wasn't enough money to do two takes on most shots. Any shot that involved something like a box being blown to bits was done on one take only. We would rehearse it a few times before we'd get our Super16mm camera rolling. One shot in particular was a little nerve racking. It involved a lot of pyrotechnics and a dolly. This means more variables to work with, a better chance of something going wrong, and that it can only be one take. There were suggestions on changing the shot or faking it but my heart was to go and try it because I was confident that it can work and I believe it did. In the end, I hope my tribute is satisfying enough for fellow Max Payne and John Woo fans until Max Payne 2 comes out later this year. I also hope that this Short/Music Video is my stepping stone for future projects as I plan to make more films & music videos when I can ...
Is there a BitTorrent link for this? I couldn't find one on http://f.moya.scarywater.net/
Why can't I moderate something "Wrong" or at least "Grossly Misinformed"?
I believe it is "while" in the queens english too! ;-)

First off, the guy playing Max Payne doesn't come close to portraying the hard ass we know (perhaps love, however unlikely) from the game. Sure its cool to see someone doing indy film projects relating to games, but bottom line the short offers nothing creative or even interesting to the story. The 10 second clip of his murdered family is well done, but saying that is even kinda a stretch. Bottom line, in order for something like this to be sucessful (or interesting for that matter), it needs substance, not cliche soft rock in the background and some mediocre gunslinging.
I will not download from either one of those "services," and that has been the case for some time now...
Not too bad. Fight scene is better then you'd see on a Showtime 3:00am movie, can't really comment on the "acting" Its a short, so the fact that there's not much story to it isn't so bad. The music.. whatever. It was a short. Basically takes the element of Max Payne that was cool ( slow motion shoot out ) and makes a live action version of JUST that. I've put it on Kazaa, but I don't know how long I'll keep it there. Do a search for maxpaynehero.zip Grinn.
I'd rather paypal the author $1 than register with yet another e-mail harvesting 'service'. :(

I went to the Max Payne movie site linked, went to a link off of http://www.maxpaynehero.com/download.html and it sent me to a link for an Anachronox movie. That movie wasn't too bad, but I wanted Max Payne and was confused. I finally found it though.

I'll say it again: games.slashdot.org is so ugly, it makes my eyes emit tiny little screams of pain and terror. The only adjective that can suitably describe games.slashdot.org is "Lovecraftian": it's ugly in a way that Man Was Not Meant To Know.
It wasn't the best thing in the world, but I liked it! It was decently done, and very much worth the download time. I must say in the end... excellent job!
I actually spent time to download that thing. I would advise you not to do so...
Neither will I, and, going a step further, seeing that the creator decided to host his file solely at two pay-per servers, I have no further desire to download the file.

If there's one good thing about downloading from freenet, it's that it's more fun than waiting in line at FilePlanet after a /.ing. :P

The short has some decent effects and gun sequences, but you can definitely see it's clearly a student film. But, better than I could ever do!
I completely agree. I played the game all the way through and found the story interesting but hardly original. What it did accomplish though is the strong desire to avenge the death of your loved ones. This desire added an extra intensity to the game, and complimented the overall experience. Yeah, these games are tried and true rehashes, but then again, most of what Hollywood pushes out is rehashes of rehashes too. We demand new hash!
...but without the awful dialogue and hammy voice acting. When you get right down to it, Max Payne was a hum-drum first person shooter with a bullet-time gimmick and some writing that tried so hard to be good that it was just bad. If Max Payne hadn't had bullet-time, then I doubt that people would have given it a second thought.
It really doesn't surprise me that the creators of Max Payne sanctioned this. They were lauded for their effort and this movie rises to the same level of skill. Oh well.

If he really wanted people to have access without hesitation why not make it available with BitTorrent or even (shudder) KaZaA?

Make up a new email address each time you need a quick account for something like FileShack. I used this email address for my new account:
fileshack.1.inda@spamgourmet.com
'fileshack' is for my reference
'1' says that the address is only valid 1 time
'inda' is my account name
They can havest that address because it no longer works. Good, yeah?

Max Payne was a good game because the gameplay was cool. The story only set up the action and was mediocre at best...but the gameplay transformed that into a great b-movie quality story.
