Top Ten E3 Picks - From 1903?

cethiesus writes "It seems Gamespy has posted their top ten picks from the 1903 E3 convention. Booth babes and magic lanterns, mmm." You've got to like the look of that high-tech 'dual monocle' technology, and may also be delighted to see that Duke Nukem Forever jokes were alive and well even at the dawn of the 20th Century.

I enjoyied this little artical. I like the ending on how Creative Labs left with best of show with the very first SoundBlaster in 1903. I don't know if this is /. worthy though... :-)

Funny, I thought it was a typo at first. Then I actually RTFA! I liked #9, but was disappointed that there wasn't mention of John von Neumann. Okay, so he wasn't born til December 28th. Perhaps he was represented in the glint of the booth babe's eyes...

For reasons I can't possibly understand, there weren't any World War II-themed first-person shooters on display at E3 1903. Isn't that weird?

    [snip]

The only difference was that there weren't any video games to look at yet.

Other than that minor little detail, E3 has remained essentially the same for hundreds of years now.

So what's this doing in the "Games" section? =p

Seriously though it is kind of funny that the years have transformed E3 from a modern technology show to a gamer's Mecca.

Thoze modern day computer kiddies... THREE WEEKS to develop a photograph????? Where on earth did they get that crazily incorrect information? There has never been a photographic process that took three weeks developing. Not even 5 years ago E3 was a great place to go, but it has turned into a friggin' carnival now. It use to be a good place of information, but now it's a cesspool of glitter and hype.
Do gamers really need 'booth babes' that are just for show and never played an electronic game in their life? Now if they were there looking good AND fragging up a storm in UT2003, then I would be impressed!

And those that think these girls actually help sell the products...get a life or rent some porn

I wrote an article that addresses this. E3 has become a show that tries to serve two masters. Either it is a place "where business gets fun" or a place where the fanboy can get jiggy wit it. It can't be both.

The babes were there 5 years ago.

I had a rather good time at this year's show-- lots of people were staffing the booths I visited, able to take the time to speak with me about the game, help me play it, and answer questions. I was surprised, because I'm not press, just a dev. It was arguably better than last year's experience.

I only had two problems with it. First, it's getting harder to find smaller games. The big titles are taking up so much of the space, I found remarkably fewer niche, indie, and otherwise small-time titles this year than any previous year.

My other problem was not with the show, but with the coverage. Writeups have been horrid this year. It was very easy to get new, interesting information from the booths, but the press didn't mirror that at all. I read absolutely nothing in any of the tons of E3 coverage that I didn't already know. Every preview was along the lines of "wow, this game is looking really pretty, we're sure it'll be great!".

Great article! Good to see someone there doesn't care for the over hype and uselessness of the gimicks used. Sell your product, not your sister ;-p

I admit I have not been able to make it to one of these (Chicago area and usually too busy with upgrades and whatnot at work) but hope to attend one in the future, as a non-fanboy ;-)
