Mastering Light

thyristor writes "'Researchers at MIT document the ultimate control over light: a way to shift the frequency of light beams to any desired colour, with near 100 per cent efficiency. This technology could revolutionise a range of fields, from turning heat into light, or even into prized terahertz rays - which hold great promise for medical imaging. It could also make it possible to focus a wide range of frequencies into a narrow band, make devices such as light bulbs and solar cells more efficient, and help to keep optical telecommunications networks moving.' These are probably the most exciting results in photonics in the last decade."

Nothing like a poorly written rape fantasy about the head of NERV operations. When people write things like this and explicitly mention the measurement of their member, how do they fail to realize that we all know they are over-compensating?

Outstanding, Kate! You have to love those bots, eh little harry?

Which companies will lead the way, both with their products and their business strategies?

Microsoft Windows OS will continue to dominate the client PC arena and Dell will be the commercial PC hardware king, HP will be the retail winner, and others, such as IBM Intellistation and Sony VAIO, will keep profitable niches, just as they do now. Gateway will take the pipe. The market leading companies in this market are too well entrenched and too massive for anything but a forward momentum constrained by the world's economies.

Massive as this market is, there is room for the bottom feeders as well, but they will not grow much.

How will antitrust law and other legal issues affect Microsoft and its competitors?

There is little liklihood of any more really significant legal action as we have seen it for the past 6 years. The DOJ/states case was a massive antitrust action as those things go and Microsoft has clearly survived with little actual change.

The residue in the EU is kind of lame and not likely to cause any problem down the road. It is kind of comical to see people who dislike Microsoft trying to create an aura of outrage and disgust over Windows inclusion of a digital juke box facility. Given the terror bombings throughout the world, it seems kind of trivial.

Technology will surely evolve and Microsoft will likely be a major part of it for ages to come. They have too much of the world's available cash to not end up with extensive ownership of many new technology areas unless they go totally numb, and that is not a likely outcome, in spite of the carps and jibes of the anti-MS crowd.

None of Microsoft's competitors, except perhaps IBM, have any real susceptibility to this kind of legal proceeding.
