Wired To Publish Slammer Source Code
Juan Carlos writes "Wired Magazine is going to publish the source code to the SQL Slammer worm in its next issue, due Tuesday, along with some kind of play-by-play of the worm's rapid spread. I actually think this is a neat idea for an article. But the fact is, the disassembly of Slammer (aka Sapphire) has been available on the Net since late January -- just hours after the worm started to spread."

I'll probably be modded down as a troll, but I feel it necessary to bring up this point. Feel free to disagree and point out something I'm not seeing here. While I understand it makes for an interesting article, I'm not sure it's a good idea to post the code of a worm or other virus. The reason is that it only makes it easier for other people who want to write similar viruses. You may say that anyone could figure out how to write a virus, anyway. While that might be true, by making the source to these worms freely available, you're putting the information out there more. If I was the editor of Wired, I'd have some serious troubles with publishing this. I understand that there's a freedom of speech and there's nothing that can actually prevent them from publishing this. But is there really anything good that can come from further disseminating the source code of a worm? It's possible, but unlikely. Just my two cents.
loloszlolzoololo, dat is ab00t sas funney as a UsrFreindly cartoon. and dey ar funnehy two!!
you know, I think you inadvertantly made a good point. does wired have the rights to publish this code? I'm not sure where assembly code or disassembled code would fall as far as this goes.
