Myth II Servers Exploited, Culprits Banned

An anonymous reader writes "The main fan-run Myth II server, PlayMyth.net seems to have been hacked. Their web page is still online, but the game server has been taken down until they can find and fix the exploit. A posting made by hackers declaring their intention can be found on the ProjectMagma messageboard." After extravagant threats by the 'hackers', the PlayMyth admins stepped in and have explained the exploit and banned the players, hopefully bringing this matter to a close.

not too exciting in the end

No player-eating dragons or cities transported to the bottom of the sea. Just spamming a small bug which crashed some rooms for a few hours. The most fun was reading their strange blackmail missives on ProjectMagma.

This is a terrible news story. I went to their site and it's just a bunch of script kiddies ranting about some game nobody cares about anymore. Plus, by posting this news, you have to admit you are giving these kids what they want - undue spotlight. I think this story doesn't fit slashdot, IMHO.

The reason Myth II gets exposure on Slashdot is because the game servers are entirely run by the (admitidly relativly small) community of players. After being bought by Microsoft Bungie closed their own servers, and rather than leaving the players in the cold, released their server source code. The folks at PlayMyth steppped in and have been hosting ever since. Also worth noting is that the people at ProjectMagma, another group of Myth fans, continue to release patches to Myth II, as they received the source code for work included in Myth III.

Learning about Cameron Diaz's wardrobe sessions for Charlie's Angels 2 is what I would call news (please include pix, Mr. CowboyNeal). New Linux info is news. Doom 3 level design information and lighting FAQs would be gaming news to me. A story on how BSP has developed since infancy is news, even though it's not new. Myth 2 is so old this might as well have been about Hexen or Quake, or even the new MunchMan game for your TI!

Hey Soulwound:) Can't say I've ever met you in Myth, but then I don't play online much.

The stupid threats are still going on on the board. This time their claiming cheats that will ruin the game (but actually only ruin it for WW2'ers, to which I say "oh well").

Don't forget, Playmyth posted the IP's and email addresses of all the culprits.

On one hand you have a bunch of what appear to be looser kids who cant plan a decent hack.
On the other hand you have at least one admin who doesnt seem to be much higher up the evolutionary chain. - "Big f00king deal","these wanks" and then publishing the chat logs ... way to keep your cool and fix things .. instead you just dropped to their level guys.

While this is a stupid story, I for one am glad to see that the Myth 2 community is still alive and well.

Myth 2 is the best game ever created

Myth 2 is the best game I have ever played. The story is magnificent, the graphics were beautiful, and the atmosphere in the game was breathtaking. It felt like I was sitting outside, playing the game in the woods. Total Audio sure did a hell of a job by giving Bungie tons of ambient sound to the game.

Sad to see though that PlayMyth has been hacked by some morons. I just hope that this won't turn them off. In my opinion, this is the best thing to keep the Myth-spirit alive. It almost makes me cry. (honestly!)
