Building A (Serious) Home Network From Scratch
Casey Lang-Vie writes "THG are running an article that outlines how to build a home network from scratch. I wish I'd read this before I attempted - now I have a few (ok, 8) unsightly holes in my wall." This is the type of network that encourages home ownership rather than rental.
If you're going to do a job, at least do it right.
I'll stick with my Windows XP that you very much. Easy and safe and I don't need to bother with an@33 9&*$# oWned by war3z_cr3W w0Ot!
Just an FYI for all the fuckers!
But my asshole is so tight I can't even insert a stick of uncooked spaghetti. What should I do to stretch my anus to unearthly proportions?
I was disappointed to see this "serious" article that essentially revolves around picking up the phone and paying money to have someone else do the work.
I woudn't even let a contractor manage my framing, much less my wiring. This is a good article for someone setting up a Mac network who doesn't want to get their pants dirty. Oh, but then they'd be using WeeFee instead, wouldn't they? It would be good to add some quality adiophile site banners as well.
Haha. It's also nice network for your neighbor's, too. The majority of types of encryption and password protections used in wireless networks is very weak.
Quite a few times I've heard variations of: "Ya I bought the wireless crap and set up last night and found out that my neighbor had a kick-ass internet connection! I thought my dsl was fast, but now I know were I am going to be downloading my cd images from now! haha"
And what are you going to do when your neighbors start using a wifi, too? set up electrical sheilding around your house so that they don't interfere with your bandwidth?
Out in the countryside they provide high-speed internet access with standard wireless equipment. Anything to powerfull and they and their costumers would have to get fcc liscences. Thats for a entire town of 20,000. They just stick the reciever/transmitter thing up on a pole and have the costumers put a intenna up outside.
Putting wiring in your house is a good idea. You get faster networks, safer networks, more stable networks. Plus you can wire up the lights and other devices with network aware switches you can use to control them. It's keen gear.
Wireless networks are for lazy people who don't know better. The best use for them is setting up temporary networks. Or in places like apartments or rentals were you can't install wires. Or most places in Europe that have old buildings you can't modify.
