NASA Mars Rover Opportunity Lifts Off

Joost Schuur writes "At 11:18 PM EDT on Monday, Opportunity, the second of 2 NASA Mars Exploration Rovers took off aboard a Boeing Delta 2 Heavy rocket after several delays and begun its 305 million mile trip to the Red Planet, where it will join its sister vehicle Spirit, which launched June 10th. Spirit and Opportunity will land on opposite sides of Mars, travelling up to 40 meters a day, and use a series of instruments to search for water, including the Rock Abrasion Tool, which will grind into rocks to give scientists a peak inside. Things are going to get crowded next January in orbit, as both NASA missions join the European Mars Express mission also launched this month and the Japanese Nozomi probe, which would finally complete its troublesome 5 year journey. Those stuck on Earth can take advantage of the closest Mars opposition in 60,000 years and watch with a telescope, or follow the images provided by the International MarsWatch 2003 group."

  9. UNIX GUIs - how sad by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Its been quite a while since I last did any editing under UNIX. All I can
say is that now that I'm doing this kind of thing again, in comparison
to equivlent windows development tools, the UNIX ones SUCK - big
time. Totally inconsistent GUIs across everything. Each tool exhibits
odd behaviors unique only to itself.

Example: If I want to search for a string or select a line number, the
requester window that pops up appears in the upper left of the desktop,
well away from the editors main window. To make matters worse, the
window does not have input focus which means that I have to physically
move the mouse to the widow and click in it. If I don't remember this - which is
most of the time - and start typing a string or a line number, I end up messing up
the code that i'm editing. This is the more serious if I don't realise what I've done.

The bloody editor doesn't even show you the line number that you're on! God forbid
that as a programmer i'd want to know what line I'm on ... Don't even get me started
on Emacs - now theres a whole book worth of complaints just brewing.

I am switchng to using VI because, at the very least, the editor is consistent in its
behavior, despite its archaic style. I'm sure that you can guess that I have been doing
a lot of loud swearing recently.

The really sad thing is that the other UNIX developers find every
opportunity to tell me how much they hate Windows, yet still, I find
them using Microsoft Visual Studio (on a PC) to browse the UNIX
source code and to do a lot of other things that are next to
impossible or very tedious under UNIX.

Our sysadmin resigned. One of the things that I had requested
was exporting my UNIX home directory as writable to my PC. At
the very least I'd be able to use a proper/well-designed editor.
To save money they will not be replacing the sysadmin ....

Each to their own, I guess.

They are pretty much a front to push the nuclear war in space agenda... seriously... I have been going to the International Space University and this is all I see. I am repeatedly scorned and ostracized for mentioning and words like "peace" and international cooperation. It is all a cheap and shoddy industry based on shady arms deals and garnering more defense dollars; all pretty depressing as well. I can only hope it will eventually go away, and the final frontier might actually open up to us terrans.

Concerning the Mars RTG (radioactive thermal generators) probes: Again, dangerous environmental hazards trying to pass as science and technology. Watch out!
