OSI Announces Open Source Awards
JohnGrahamCumming writes "There's a story running on ZDNet about how OSI is going to be giving Open Source Awards with cash prizes of up to $10,000. The idea is to create the "Nobel Prizes" of Open Source. Announcement was made yesterday as OSCON with some big names backing the awards (e.g. Sun, OSAF and (interestingly) a major venture capital firm USVP)."
*ducks*
$10,000?! WOW!
But really, if one was to write such a super OSS program, wouldn't he be hired by a big corporation and paid at least ten times that amount?
ok maybe not but close enough
Pick me! Pick me! Oh, wait a second... my project isn't popular and no one contributes to it.
With a 10,000 USD incentive, maybe the gnome developers will actually give what their users wan't such a proper file dialog, split pane in nautilus, a non crippled file-roller and maybe they will give their users a GUI to configure advanced settings without having to go through gconf.
On the other hand, the kde guys could replace that cheezy keramik with a real style as defualt (.net and alloy are good candidates)
The Razzies for this will be called "The Pre-Alpha-Aplha Awards", given out to OSS projects that never make it out of "-1, thinking about it"

The Open Source movement, otherwise known as 'Free Software', has been a topic of considerable debate on the Internet's most controversial site. The majority of this debate has centered around the technical merits of the software, with the esteemed editors argueing against adopting Linux by employing the full depth of their considerable intellects, and the other side hurling death threats and similar invective. This has allowed many who would not otherwise receive quality information about Open Source software to be made aware of many of its ramifications, but one issue has been left alone: The overt racism that is deeply embedded in the movement.
Allow me to explain.
Alan Cox; Richard Stallman; Bruce Perens; Wichert Akkerman; Miguel DeIcaza.
What do you see in this list of names? Are there any African-Americans on it? Absolutely not, none of those names sound like one a self-respecting black person would have! No Maurice, no Luther, no Lil' Kim. There are many other lists such as this, you can see one here. Flip through each page, do you see anything other than white faces? Of course you don't, because Open Source and its adherents are ardent racists and they absolutely forbid access to the sacred 'kernel' by any person of color.
Lets look at another list, this time a compendium of the companies using Linux. Are there any black owned companies on that list? Nooooooo. How about these companies? They all have something to do with Open Source software, any of them owned by an African-American? No again. Here is an extensive collection of photographs from a LUG (Linux User Gathering) meeting, more can be viewed at that link. What is odd about these pictures, and every other photograph I have ever seen of a LUG meeting, is that there is not one single black person to be seen, and probably none for miles.
More racist overtones can be found by examining the language of Open Source. They often refer to 'white hat' hackers. These 'white hats' scurry about the Internet doing good, but illegal, acts for their fellow man. In stark contrast we find the 'black hat' hackers. They destroy the good works of others by breaking into systems, stealing data, and generally causing havoc. These two terms reflect the mindset of most Linux developers. White means good, black means bad. Anywhere there is black, there is uncontrollable destruction and lawlessness. Looking further we see black lists that inform other users of 'bad' hardware, Samba, an obvious play on the much hated Little Black Sambo book, Mandrake, which I won't explain except to say that the French are notorious racists. This type is linguistic discrimination is widespread throughout the Open Source culture, lampooned by many of its more popular sites.
It is also a fact that all Unix 'distros' contain a plethora of racist commands with not so hidden symbolism.
It can hardly be coincidence that the prime operating system of choice of the 'open source supremacists' - Linux, features commands which are poorly disguised racist acronyms. For example: 'awk' (All White Klan) , 'sed' (shoot nEgroes dead), 'ln' (lynch negroes), 'rpm' (raical purity mandatory), 'bash' (bring a slave home), 'ps' (persecute sambo), 'mount' (murder or unseat nubians today), 'fsck' (favored supreme Christian klan). I could go on and on about the latent racist symbolism in Linux, but I fear it would take weeks to enumerate every incidence.
Is there a single unix command out there that does not have some hidden racist connotation ? Suffice it to say that the racism pervades Linux like a particularly bad smell. Can you imagine the effect of running such a racist operating system on the impressionable mind ? I don't have to remind you that transmitting subliminal messages is banned in the USA, and yet here we have an operating system that appears to be one enormous submliminal ad for the Klan!
One of the few selling points of Open Source software is that it is available in many different languages. Browsing through the list I see that absolutely none a

Kolkata, June 24 (IANS) A 13-year-old boy whose bizarre ailment has a fly-like insect emerging out of him is far from being cured as doctors struggle to detect the source of the parasite.
The fully-grown flies, as doctors described the parasites, have been emerging out of Chandan Goswami's genitals and flying off for more than two weeks now.
Chandan, now receiving treatment at a state-run hospital in West Bengal's Burdwan district, is said to be suffering from a condition called myiasis, a disease seen mostly in Central and Latin America.
In myiasis, the larvae of a type of fly invade a human or animal body, dead or alive. The deposited eggs can then enter the body through pores, the mucous membrane or even the mouth. The hatched larvae then emerge out the host's skin and pupate.
However, in Chandan's case, whole flies complete with wings are emerging out of his body and flying off.
"This is very, very rare. We are trying to find out how the fly entered the boy's body," says Sudhansu Pan, the surgeon attending Chandan.
Doctors carried out a cystoscopy to clear the boy's urinary tract, but the treatment has failed because two more flies emerged out of his penis on Monday.
Doctors admitted they have not been able to identify where the parasite deposit lay inside Chandan's body.
Health authorities have formed a medical board of seven doctors to treat Chandan. Doctors were also "coordinating" with physicians abroad who have experience in dealing with myiasis.
In myiasis, the maggots usually are found underneath the skin and are removed by minor surgery. But whole flies emerging out of a human body is rare, doctors said.
Chandan told doctors he first felt pain in his abdomen almost a month ago. And then he saw the flies intermittently coming out of his penis.
He told his parents, but they didn't initially believe him. Earlier this month, they saw the strange occurrence and took their son to Burdwan hospital, where doctors too were stunned to see the rare case.

Don't throw a party for the winners, it's _*VERY*_ large leagel liabillity so DON'T do it. Here is my experiance about throwing a developers party....
First, there was a plan: how to bring together the different development groups at work? My boss said there was a sort of tension he thought could be eased by some social interaction. Not easy. Almost all of the different development groups despised each other, each thinking its "art" was more important and eloquent than the others'.
There was the kernel extension developer group, coding mostly in C and some PowerPC and x86 assembler. They worked on making our PCI board work with Linux, *BSD, Mac OS X, QNX, and Solaris. They worked "special hours," coming in at one and staying late, supposedly, until seven or eight at night. They enjoyed Jizz cola and had a penchant for ThinkGeek t-shirts and cracking jokes about Win32 API calls and the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.
We had XML developers too. They worked on our website, documentation formatting, and simple apps to configure the driver software. They used HTML, XSL, JavaScript, and a bit of Java. They typically dressed casually, drank coffee and tea, and liked to work straight from the spec: no "Learn XSL in 30 Days" books were to be found in their cubicle farm.
Then we had the guys who wrote full-out UNIX apps. These guys and the products they wrote had been acquired from another company, and were the source of most of the tension: they'd never really been integrated into our group except that they were physically present with the rest of us. They all had beards or mullets or long, unwashed hair. Many wore suspenders or the afore-mentioned ThinkGeek clothes; some even had Penguin tatooes or small C app code tattooed on them. Their cubicle farm was known for the bleating laughter that exploded when one of them found a "silly" bug on someone else's code, and for the rotten, fetid stench that could only be compared to three-day-old shit reeking from inside a rotting corpse's abdominal cavity.
So, in order to get the guys to "know each other" my boss had asked me to organize a during-hours, alcohol-friendly party. My ideas ranged from a keg or two to live entertainment, AKA strippers. But as to what to get them to actually talk to each other in a human manner I had no clue. So I let it go til the last minute and decided to let my inherent creativity mull it over in the back of my head.
When the day of the party had arrived, the catering company brought in a few trays of lunch meat, chicken, pizza, and side dishes, I had picked up the kegs (all four) from the local brewery, and the big-screen TV and DVD were set up ready to blast the Matrix into the eyes and ears of my co-workers. The eagerness in the the air was encouraging and I thought that loosening up and smiles going on even now were a good sign. I even saw some of the guys who'd known each other previously begin to bunch up, bringing along the co-workers they knew from everyday work.
The first thing everyone did was hit the food line, loading up their plates and grabbing a cup for beer to wash it down with. A few approached me and thanked me for the food; it seems appeasing the belly really did tame the beast. After a few minutes of silence and eating and a few second and third courses, they guys were ready to sit down and be entertained. After asking if anyone needed anything else before the movie started, the lights went out and the Matrix began playing. I heard a few enthusiastic comments and jokes being told.
About half-way through the movie I noticed a lot of the guys, especially from the UNIX app group, were getting up and presumably going to the restroom. No suprise, as the second keg was history by now and the third was probably half-way gone. I also noticed some of the guys bumping into things and stumbling. Alcohol's the social lubricant, eh? Well, not long after, my bladder beckoned and I answered. As I made my way to the restroom, I had a self-satisfied smile on my face: my littl
Open source software is generally written by much more than one person. Would the winner have to split her winnings with hundreds of others, or would the award go to whoever led the project?
By participating in stuff like this, all we are doing is getting more profits into the hands of big hardware and software integration companies, and getting more people laid off. The idea of Open Source is great for these companies because they dont have to pay for development costs, and they can make bigger profits that way. Who gets the shaft? software developers like you and me. Every body else is happy because they can get very cheap software on multiple patforms all they paid for a few core developers.
This OSS stuff has has done to software developers what MP3 has done to musicians. Eveybody is happy with the free stuff except the innovators who have to scrape by.
Dont fall into this trap, sponsered by greedy hardware companies that couldnt care less about paying for software.

Makes a lot of sense. Venture firms in general have been hurting lately thanks to the depressing influence of the-monopoly-who-shall-not-be-named. If a little seed money can help break things open, it could pay off handsomely. Of course, having first crack at people with serious ability is probaby worth the ante all by itself.

Northbound SR 51 to be closed between I-10 and Colter Street, all ramps to enter SR 51 north closed July 12-14
July 10, 2003
Construction on State Route 51 will close the freeway's northbound lanes between I-10 and Colter Street and all ramps to enter northbound SR 51 this weekend while crews install drainage pipes under the freeway, widen the bridge over McDowell Road and make repairs to the freeway pavement.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) says northbound SR 51 will be closed between I-10 and Colter Street, just north of Camelback Road, from 1 a.m. Saturday (July 12) until 5 a.m. Monday (July 14).
All ramps from I-10 and Loop 202 to go north on SR 51 will be closed. The westbound I-10 entrance ramp at Washington Street and the northbound SR 51 entrance ramps at McDowell, Thomas and Indian School roads also will be closed all weekend.
Drivers will be detoured north on 16th Street and 24th Street while SR 51 is closed.
Southbound SR 51 will be narrowed to one lane between Colter Street and Highland Street from 1 a.m. Saturday (July 12) until 5 a.m. Monday (July 14).
The southbound SR 51 ramp to go west on I-10 and head toward the Deck Park Tunnel will be closed from 1 a.m. Saturday (July 12) until 5 a.m. Monday (July 14). Drivers will be detoured to eastbound I-10 and can use Washington Street to reach the downtown area.
McDowell Road will be closed on both sides of SR 51 from 8 p.m. Friday (July 11) until 5 a.m. Monday (July 14) while crews restripe McDowell and widen the SR 51 bridge over McDowell. All freeway entrance and exit ramps at McDowell Road also will be closed.
The construction work is part of the $75 million SR 51 project to add HOV lanes in each direction between I-10 and Shea Boulevard, higher sound walls, rubberized asphalt pavement and operational improvements to the freeway.
SR 51 construction information is available at www.SR51.com or by calling the project hotline at 602-248-3098. The project is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2004

I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Open Source fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Linux box (a P4 3200 w/1024 Megs of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Athlon 900 running Windows XP, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Linux box, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this file transfer, Mozilla will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even vi is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Linux machines, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Linux box that has run faster than its Windows counterpart, despite the Linux machine's faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 3200 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that Linux is a "superior" OS.
Open Source addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use an Open Source over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.
Big factors keeping people from using it:
1. no GUI
2. requires a local PostgreSQL install
Both will be fixed soon by the addition of a Swing GUI and a publically available DB server.

Open-source + Free Software = Software Revolution ...at least I think so :)
You know... The same thoughts entered my mind when I first encountered the whole notion of open-source and free software years ago. For the sake of simplicity, I am going to replace open-source and free software as OSFSF and am going to assume that they are identical in the context of this article (I think it is a valid position to take, especially since most open-source software is free).
I am still not sure what to make of it. I don't know if it is "good" or "bad".
I suspect that my view of the market is very different from yours. I'm a socialist and on the far left so I don't care about corporations or the state of "wealth". In addition, I have been unemployed since I graduated from school 2 years ago so I might not even find a job in this field regardless of the impact of OSFSF. However, I do care about one thing: workers. I am not a nationalist but I would like to see workers, in this case software developers, be able to make a decent living (don't ask what is decent--for now assume it is the same as your definition). I really do not want to see people lose their jobs, whether it is due to out-sourcing to foreign countries, or due to OSFSF.
the BAD
Your MP3 argument is totally irrelevant. Nevertheless, I understand your concern***. I think software developers WILL lose jobs due to OSFSF. I am pretty sure of it. For instance, if OSFSF replaces Microsoft software, Microsoft will lay off most of its workforce (I imagine at least 20,000 will be let go). It is even worse for small firms who survive by developing proprietary technology (generally protected by patents) to serve a particular industry or niche. OSFSF will likely destroy these companies, meaning more lay-offs. The bad thing here is that the people laid off will have nowhere to go since the OSFSF communities don't generally pay anyone (some are employees of corporations but they are only a few). If this was all there to it, it would be easy to say that OSFSF is bad for societies--at least from a left-wing perspective. But is there more to it?
the GOOD
There is one thing that may render the previous worker argument moot. Someone above who responded before me touched on this. Is it not possible that a new structure may be created in the software industry? After thinking about it for years, I have come to the conclustion that the software industry's structure will change. In fact, I think this is not a just a possibility but a highly likely scenario. I think the workers will be fine under my perceived scenario.
What do I think will/is happen/happening? I think there will be a software revolution due to OSFSF. It will be a MAJOR change. What I think will happen is that software developers will not work for proprietary corporations that try to maintain competitive advantage--as a matter of fact survive--by keeping their technology "secret". Instead, you will end up with a society where software developers will be hired for their skills and capabilities to work on OSFSF. THe firms that provide solutions will not benefit by keeping things secretive; instead, they survive by providing total solutions or valued added services (ie. system integration, custom programming, feature development, support, training, etc). People who are respected and get jobs will be those that CAN do the job. If you can program well, or provide support, or add features to a free/low-cost product, you will be valued. I think programmers and others in the tech industry will be fine. Those that suffer will likely be existing corporations.
I think OSFSF will have an impact similar to what science did in the 1700's (or thereabouts). The software revolution will be similar to the scientific revolution of that time period. If you recall, what the scientific revolution did was to change the structure of society. Before the scientific revolution, you had a lot of shops/stores/whate

Bah. As an American, I must say that the thing we most need to know is - What will Linus be wearing!
Wonder what Linus will wear!
Anyone noticed that the 7 person committee includes Dr. Marshall Kirk McKusick (4.2BSD fast filesystem), Eric S. Raymond (loves python), Guido van Rossum (python creator)?
Wonder how that would affect projects that rival those people's projects to get awards? Say, Hans Reiser (reiserfs), or anything related to Perl?
LinuxFund to some extend gives money to potential projects but I find their voting process very poor. Not because it's bad but because few people, not themselves trying to get money, bother voting. The end result is that people that get their friends to go vote on their project get votes and nobody else does. If you really want to help lesser projects I suggest you vote at linuxfund.org and maybe get the LinuxFund credit card.
At what price learning? At what cost wisdom? The price is a man's peace of mind, and the cost is his life.
In 2002, the prize money was $25,000. Prior to that it was $10,000. In the late nineties it was $5000. In fact, it was $5000 for most of the time since the award was instituted.
Given that, a start of $10,000 is pretty darn generous.
There's a similar Open Source award (although no fat sacks of cash included). Just a few days ago the ActiveState Active Awards were handed out at OSCON. These awards are given to those actively contributing in the Open Source world.
It is an interesting coincidence that the story "Sun expands Unix deal with SCO" appeared on slashdot yesterday and Sun is a sponsor of the OSI award.
CNET Reported:
A previously secret licensee of SCO Group's Unix intellectual property has revealed its identity: Unix leader Sun Microsystems.
Sun hasn't been ashamed to try to profit from the effects of that suit. It jumped at the chance to declare itself a safe haven for spooked technology buyers: "Sun's complete line of Solaris and Linux products...are covered by Sun's portfolio of Unix licensing agreements. Solaris and Sun Linux represent safe choices for those companies that develop and deploy services based on Unix systems," Sun declared the day SCO filed suit against IBM.
"Now we know why Sun was so absolutely confident about where they stand in this whole thing that they were essentially able to turn it into some marketing and sales FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) of their own," Illuminata analyst Gordon Haff said.
So it appears that OSI has been arguing that The SCO Group's Intellectual Property is worthless and taking money from Sun who is using it for PR. On one hand Sun is trying to ingratiate itself with the Linux community by funding an award and the other hand the PR is FUD against both Linux and IBM's AIX. Esr did get some press about the award, but then he has always been good at self-promotion, and not word one about the glaring conflicts of interest.
Thus I hereby nominate esr's OSI and Sun for the OSCON blue ribbon for:
1. Questionable Situational Ethics
2. Self Destructive FUD
3. Conflict of Interest
Nobel made his fortune on dynamite. Esr is a dot com has been in terms of his fortune, but he does have a chance at making some small fortune by selling his silicon snake oil.
What I find particularly amusing about this is that Linus or RMS could win a Nobel Prize and esr might be a footnote in the history books as one who attempts to rewrite history and take credit for the work of others.
The developers have a mortal fear of releasing 1.0, apparently afraid of being deluged with people bitching about mplayer's constant segfaults. They seem to be moving, asymptotically, towards 1.0, as LaTeX does towards pi.
