Sammy Announces Sammy vs. Capcom, 4 Player Guilty Gear

DeadMeat (TM) writes "According to GameForms, Sammy announced that it will be working with Capcom on arcade versions of a forthcoming Sammy vs. Capcom 2D fighting game, as well as a solo Sammy project, a four-player Guilty Gear fighter sequel. Screenshots of the latter are available from Impress Game Watch, with presumably more information about the announcement for those who speak Japanese." Update: 09/12 04:10 GMT by S : GameSpot has more information on the full line-up at the AMShow arcade exhibition in Tokyo, which is where this news originated from.

    Seems like all the good fighting games are against Capcom(Sammy vs Capcom, Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2, etc). So, it makes you wonder what Capcom has been doing to deserve all this anger from the Sammy and SNK camps to merit such fighting.

    In other news, the OSDN has been purchased by Capcom in order to turn Slashdot into a Microsoft Tech Support page.

    Assuming that Capcom updates their sprites so they'll look good beside the lavish characters from Guilty Gear, this game could be a great boon to the fighter genre. Capcom fighters get all of the exposure, simply because they're made by Capcom, while deep, beautifully-drawn games like the Guilty Gear series only get recognition from the hardcore fighter fans.

    I do, however, have the sinking feeling that the game will follow the Capcom fighting system more closely than the GG system. No double jumps, air dashes, or False Roman Cancels :(

      The Capcom vs. SNK series put SNK characters in a Capcom engine, but SNK vs. Capcom does the opposite. Hopefully the fact they're calling it "Sammy vs. Capcom" instead of "Capcom vs. Sammy" means Sammy will contribute the engine.

      If you RT[F]A, it states exactly that. Sammy is doing the engine, and Capcom characters will be redone in the GG style.

    Yeah, I didn't think anything official would come from Nintendo until it actually happened but I wanted to know that my waiting was a good idea.

    Indeed. It's especially fun when "someone" (aka me) is actually on-topic in the sense of answering a direct question.

    Of course, the idea that they're trimming down a topic that has a sum total of 8 post (9 counting this one) is just foolish to begin with. Ah, well, not every moderator can be smart or discerning.

    The Guilty Gear series will probably be the only representatives on the Sammy side, but I can only hope they choose more interesting characters from the Capcom side. I've read rumours of Rival Schools and Darkstalkers characters in this new game (with new sprites!) Which would be a relief after SvC.

    Also, the Capcom characters are being licensed by Sammy, so the actual game will be made by them, in a similar way to SvC being made by Snk/Playmore. Bringing the Capcom people into a Guilty Gear style game would be fantastic! I hope it doesn't peter out.

      Sheesh, pick up CvS2 and choose Haohmaru already! :)

      (Though I generally frown on armed vs. unarmed characters going at each other in fighting games. It ruins the sense of realism when a strong attack from an armed character causes the same amount of damage as a strong attack from an unarmed character.)

    Any wordo n whaat arcade heardware will be used? What about potential home console stuff. I hope it's not PS2...PS2's lack of VRAM makes it hard to do much with sprites. gamecube or xbox would be a good home tho'.

    Just as long as they update those cruddy low-res sprites for the Capcom charactors. Guilty Gear's sprites were so awesome.

      SF3? That's not where Capcom has been getting its sprites so far in the VS series.
