I think this is all depending on who you ask, really. The Wii's whole approach was to appeal to other types of people than hardcore gamers, and it looks like the PS3's whole lineup is for hardcore gamers. So, it's a little bit like comparing apples and oranges, I think.
As a musician, I'll try to answer your question, even though I DO think it's a bit flamebait.
First, the learning curve. Anyone who plays an instrument will tell you it's pretty hard at the beginning. Especially chords. I still can't do a proper barre chord. Those things are hard. This is all compared to Guitar Hero, which allows me to pick up the controller and bust out a wide selection of songs after just a few tries(on easy mode, obviously).
Second, the price difference isn't as much as you think. If you want a GOOD guitar, it will cost you at least 300-500 dollars. If you try to give a beginner a cheap guitar, they will probably become frustrated and quit. This is not including an amp(a cheap 15W amp is like 75 dollars I think), strings, and a stand.
Third, multiplayer. This goes with #1, but my girlfriend can play this. Any video game that can get your girlfriend to play with you is worth it's weight in gold.
Fourth, calluses. They hurt when you begin and not everyone wants to deal with them.
Probably more, but that's all I can come up with off the top of my head. You should try playing the game, though. It's fun. You'll probably like it.
You should try Super Mario Strikers. It's a Mario soccer game and really easy to pick up and really intense. Very possibly the most intense Mario-themed game ever, IMHO.
I've been playing Guild Wars since it was released, and just last week or so they made my name from Jackson the Toucher to Jack the Toucher. No one gets the joke at all anymore =(.
I have seen this evolution of people in MMO worlds and I'm not liking it so much. It used to be a fairly docile and pleasant place to go and talk to people, but now I can't login to anywhere without someone offering to pay gold to watch a Ranger do a/dance. It's getting really full of jerks and creepy people. Maybe we need to retreat back to MUDs to get away from these folk.
Maybe I'm just a fanboy, but Guild Wars has an attribute system that you can completely switch at just about any moment, many milestones by reaching different towns and armors, and also a Guild PVP ladder. It's definitely worth checking out, even if you're a skeptic of MMO's.

On a somewhat similar note, does anyone know how to pronounce this game? Katamari isn't too bad, but is Damacy pronounced "Dama-chee" or "Dama-see"? I don't want to look stupid when I go into the store to buy it.
I would agree with everything you said except that part.
For the most part, it's not too bad. But the one class that is GREATLY overpowered is the medic class. Medics are widely considered the "point-whores" of the game, because you now not only get points for healing your team, but you can also revive them with shock paddles. Some people may say this doesn't sound too bad, but if you're in a squad with other people, you can quickly rack up the points by healing and reviving your allies. Also, to top it off, the medic rifle you unlock later in the game is more powerful than the assault rifle that most people have.
With all that said, the Special Ops kit doesn't get any points for blowing up the other team's commander media(radar, artillery strikes, scanners). What crap.
While not exactly what the poster wanted, Ip-relay.com is a pretty cool site where you can call anyone in the United States for free without even talking. I'm really surprised it hasn't been abused to the extent where it was taken down. Give it a try if you have a spare moment.
First of all, I want to say this is totally uncalled for. I dunno why they can't just go Blizzard's route and make only one CD-key run at once online. You can't really get an online key for Starcraft without buying it, and it's been out for years.
Also, I want to know how this will affect reselling of the game. Let's say in a few months I'm tired of HL2 and decide to sell it to a friend or something. Will he be unable to make a steam ID? Will he have to use mine? Because that would suck a bit.
It just seems they put way too much into this stuff when there are such easy answers already out.

There isn't a MMOFPS anyway, is there? I haven't heard of one. I'll stick to Battlefield 2 and Counter-Strike anyway.
