Slashback: Blaster, Sabers, Canada
Art of the Saber Jagaast writes "As a counterpoint to all the hype about the Star Wars kid, here's a Star Wars fan film that's actually very well done. Art of the Saber is 'a light saber fight sequence with the flavor of a Hong Kong martial arts action movie.' Well worth watching." Update by J : I've made torrents available.
Vote early, often, and reversably. An anonymous reader writes "As a follow up to a previous story here on Slashdot on electronic voting, Excite has a story on the same subject with a bit more information including this amazing quote from Deborah Seiler, Diebold's West Coast sales representative: '"These activists don't understand what they're looking at," Seiler said.'"
GSM-crack paper online morcheeba writes "Copies of the GSM-crack paper described in last week's Slashdot article are now available online (PDF) thanks to John Young's Cryptome"
Mandrake ads...take 2 *no comment* writes "Apparently there has been some controversy over the ads in the upcoming Mandrake 9.2. I thought it was pretty cut & dried, but apparently Mandrake thought it was enough of a controversy to to release a written statement about it. I wonder how many flames were posted in the slashdot forum using the download version of Opera."
Blaster Worm still alive and well on MIT campus fwc writes "MIT still has 900 network drops disabled due to the Blaster worm infection. Of particular interest is that MIT network security requires users to reformat their hard drive and re-install their operating system before they get back on the network. Sounds like a good excuse to reinstall something other than a Microsoft operating system."
A big AWOOOGAH for Canadian file sharers.
Rumor writes in response to a recent story suggesting that Canadian users could swap files scot-free: "Listen, Canadians, don't go using your p2p apps and thinking you are immune from lawsuit, you are liable for copyright infringement if you share files on p2p apps.
To wit: a fellow law student and I have written an
analysis of s. 80 of the Copyright Act and we've
concluded that one can download music safely under the Private Copying provision, but no one can share or upload files without infringing on copyright.
In a nutshell, Private Copying allows anyone to make a
copy of a song purely for their own use. As you
probably know, when you share files and someone
downloads from you, what actually happens is that
their computer makes a request and your computer
actually sends the file to them. Thus, you're copying
for someone else's use and infringing. It doesn't
matter if you didn't realize that's what happens,
either... intent is not required for infringement.
The upside is that you can accept copies from other
people (ie. download) all you want. Although there
might be an issue of contributory infringement to
worry about... I won't go into analyzing that, since
so far the record companies are only suing uploaders.
The article can be found on greplaw.
I've recently confirmed this analysis with an IP law professor at my university, so I'm pretty damn sure of it. So, please, be aware of this danger. Downloading cool, uploading/sharing not. I
guess the situation still better than nothing."
Why not ask for your money back? zaaj writes "There are several articles out about a newly found/fixed(openssh.org) buffer management bug in OpenSSH and some derivatives. Cisco's Advisory only mentions DoS attacks against certain of their SSH-enabled devices, but ZDNet's article hints at rumors of long-existing root exploits. Regardless, RedHat's got their typical list of updated packages with the patch back-ported. A few other distro's have info in the vendor section of Cert's advisory CA-2003-24"
Let's overlook the racism and the poor acting, for a moment. (True fans are busy awaiting Episode3 and aren't still making excuses for TPM and ATOC) On a much deeper level, StarWars sends a shocking, frightening, and sickening message to America's youth.
StarWars portrays space as a site of warfare between different species and even between rival human factions.
When A New Hope was released to theaters, America was at peace. The Vietnam War had recently been brought to a close, and Americans were looking forward to a new era of prosperity and at friendly relations with their neighbors.
But within a few short years, America invaded Grenada, Nicaragua, Panama, Iraq, and Haiti. Now Iraq and Afghanistan. What had happened? What had become of our message of peace? What could have transpired in the interim to bring about this cruel turn of events?
I'll tell you what: StarWars was released to thronging masses of American youths. In their orgiastic rush to imbibe their new-found cultural icons, they discarded all the wisdom we had acquired through the blood and sweat of our recent military conquests.
It's no surprise, of course. Even the name "StarWars" itself conveys a message of conflict and carnage. A New Hope is, at bottom, a story about armed rebellion by rabble against a benevolent legal order, precisely the sort of communistic message we had come so close to defeating in Vietnam.
Perhaps it would've been different if we had won the Vietnam War. Perhaps then we would've witnessed the fall and destruction of communism and all its bastard progeny (socialism, yuppyism, the Home Shopping Network, etc.). Unfortunately, the world will never know.
George Lucas, I think I can speak for everyone here on slashdot, and indeed with the entire breath of humanity: you should be ashamed of yourself for what you have wrought.
Blaster, Sabers, Canada ...
What are things that annoy and pester over time. =)
My Involvement with DataUSA, Inc. and Tracy Costin My name is Leonard Mastri and this is the story of my involvement with Tracy Costin and DataUSA, Inc. all facts are true but some date ranges may be off because I am writing this from memory. How it began About a month before mothers day 2001 I was called by Dianna Farino she was inquiring about whether I could wire her new office I asked why and she said she couldn't work her sister Tracy Costin anymore and she was breaking up the business (Accurate Data Collectors) I said no problem because I was selling my computer store and would be available I told her to email me I received one email from her about a week later and that was the last I heard from her about a week later I received a phone call from Tracy Costin she wanted me to work for her because she was starting her own business and needed a programmer I told her that her sister had called me and she pleaded with me not to help Dianna she told me how evil Dianna was and how she had screwed her and was breaking up the company behind her back and she Tracy would even pay me not to help her After listening to her story I believed that Dianna was really doing her wrong and I would come work for her since I was selling my store and was going to take the summer off the study and get a regular job with a big company because I was tired of working for myself and never being home she promised me that if I came to work for her the money would be great and there would be few hours per week to work Mothers Day Tracy informed me that on mother's day she had scheduled the movers to show up at the office of Accurate Data Collectors and that she was planning to take half of the equipment because as a half owner of the company she was entitled to it plus Dianna hadn't paid her since the first week of January I showed up mothers day morning and Tracy soon arrived we had to wait for the locksmith to show up because Dianna had replaced the locks to keep Tracy out. Tracy showed the locksmith the lease with her name on it and said she needed the lock drilled and replaced once the locksmith was done we started disconnecting computer hardware to get it ready for the movers. I soon realized that Tracy had not thought about how involved it was to remove the things she wanted luckily for her I am very knowledgeable about electrical and computer wiring and was able to disconnect the cabling or she never would have been able to remove the caller cubicles and I also took the network wiring all in all we removed far more then 50% of the computer equipment we left so little that Dianna had no chance to start a new business with what we left behind the whole time Tracy was telling me stories about how evil her sister Dianna was and Dianna had practically bankrupted her by not paying her since January and how she was such a good employee and what a victim she was I believed everything she told me her story was very convincing when I talked to the 2 supervisors that agreed to come with Tracy to her new Business (DataUSA) they verified the stories and had nothing good to say about Dianna so I was sold on the whole victim story hook line and sinker. I helped the movers load everything into the moving truck and they brought it to the storage facility across the parking lot from the office once we were finished removing everything Tracy wanted she paid me $300 dollars for my services she informed me that she had very little money left but she did tell me she cleaned out the Accurate Data bank account of approximately $9000 and that was all she had to build a new business. The New Office Tracy had originally planned to move back into the Accurate Data offices once Dianna had removed what was left she had made a deal with the landlord to take over the office. Dianna contacted the landlord and told him her side of the story at this point the landlord didn't want anything to do with either of them so Tracy found an available office in Guilford she showed me the new office space in Guilford it was approximately 1500 squar
