I mean, you're saying that if a site looks old, then people won't stop to check it out right?
Well what if the site looks new and fresh and updated and has those same articles everyone else has posted,,, and no comments.
What then? You're definitely not getting a repeat visitor once that person has decided this site has nothing over any other news echo chamber. They might even take a more negative view feeling their time was wasted sifting through a content-free but slick-looking abyss.
Better to alienate a casual who was unlikely to be a repeat visitor than someone interested in the actual discussion who will likely be tempted to check back.
The people who contribute to slashdot right now have very clear expectations. No slick bs on the front page, show whole summaries, UTF-8, high contrast, fluid layout, use my whole widescreen monitor, javascript optional, show all user info on comments, make the comment UI unimpeachable.
These are the expectations of people that make Slashdot worth visiting _at all_. You've been told this many, many times since announcing the beta.
These design goals may not meet the expectations of new or casual users of other sites or iphones. Well guess what? If you compromise the design of slashdot to cater to these people which add no value to the site then you alienate your core contributor. Users use slashdot for the community in spite of the perceived-backwardness of the boring older-style web UI and judging by active posters with high IDs who also complained they grow accustomed to it.
All of the people that Slashdot Media loves to talk about here: http://slashdotmedia.com/about...
Those 4000+ commenters a day that are the supposed value add to Slashdot?
And then when they started redirecting users to the theoretically READY TO GO beta site this week, it was still a train wreck and change very little of the high-level concerns people had, at least that anyone could tell. I mean screwing around with fonts is easy, low-impact stuff, which completely misses the point.
So now we're at the juncture where we just swipe the game board off the table and stomp off, because jesus christ. What the fuck.
I love shitting up comments with curse words to make this site NSFW in some places.
I love people who self-censor with stars too, that just warms my cackles.
WHOSE USERS' EXPECTATIONS CHANGED???
Are you concerned that shiny new C-levels who have heard about this fabled Slashdot will toddle on over to see what techies really think from their Galaxy tablet and be shown a site that doesn't look like BusinessInsider, and then decide that obviously we're all out of touch?
Well I've got news for you. Maybe we are! But do you know what, WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK.
Either figure out a way to produce a different portal to the site that's shown to people using a tablet anonymously (the majority of people that would click on ad impressions), and not fuck with classic, or we're walking. That's really what this is about, Soulskill.
Commenters are doing such things, but it is foolish to think that management is going to throw good money after bad to redesign the site again when they've had a bad year with Slashdot Media financially.
Their best bet is to simply turn it into another buzzfeed-like linkfarm and hope it generates revenue somehow (maybe sell it). So... yeah. Let's just take her out back and put her out of her misery.
Maybe some angel investor will come in and buy up the property and allow us to like support the site's maintenance via paypal.
Maybe I'll grow another dick.:3
c) Controls and moderation information not prevalent enough per comment
d) Terrible use of whitespace
e) Horizontal page usage is ineffective
f) Comments only load via javascript
g) No significant backend improvements relevant to userbase (i.e. UTF-8 support)
h) Low contrast design makes getting lost in a comment thread too easy
i) The look is too indistinct from every other Web 3.0 website out there; this is bad because some of Slashdot's charm came from the antiquated look and gave it a very unique feel. This is completely lost other than the color scheme.
j) Sans-serifed fonts make reading long posts very difficult
As has been mentioned elsewhere, Dice is getting almost no ad revenue from slashdot because most of the users either don't click on ads or use adblock (complete write-off for FY13). So not visiting the site just reduces the site load and saves them a little bit of operating cost.
Why not just pay XYZ organization for the right to use ogle?
Can't we just do that? Can't the MPAA or ISO or someone just set up a little drop box that we use to pay for privledge, get a piece of paper that says "okay, now you can't get sued, you paid the royalties on the patented algorithms".
Maybe they could bundle into the purchase price of computer-based DVD players. Then anyone can use any software they want, for free.
Does the hard drive look seperate for each user? Or are they piggy-backing onto the Fast User Switching / Built-in Terminal Server feature of XP to provide user seperation?
The article is _light_ on detail for a five page pseudo-advertisement.
that don't allow you to permanently group a bunch of songs togheter (say from a well sequenced album) so that they don't get too seperated in your rotation. So you can have the best of both worlds.
I can't imagine why people would get roped in by internet accelerators or time syncronization services when these things features are largely already available to them in the OS, and learning how to use them is a google away.
They don't help you in any way help remove heat from the CPU. Aluminum may be a better conductor of heat than steel, but it has a lower heat capacity. This is important because what's on both sides of the aluminum case? Air. Which is a poor heat conductor. You're ultimately limited by the ability of the external air to remove the heat from the outside of the case, which is effectively zero (especially if it isn't moving). At least the steel case can better retain excess spot heat from the case, whereas the aluminum heats up uniformly, thus rendering it useless for further heat redistribution.
The ability of the case to conduct heat away better is only useful if it is connected to a yet larger heat sink, and unless you replace the rubber/plastic feet with copper pads and use it on the concrete floor in the basement...
It has nothing to do with the chip, and everything to do with thermal management.
Dell PCs don't have this problem because Dell PCs are specifically engineered to remove heat efficiently. Don't you wish you could have a custom air hood for your CPU/northbridge/case?
Same chip, OC'd to 3200. Zalman flower, a tiny bit of compound. Fan direction on the CPU so it directs the air away from the MB toward the 12cm slow-RPM exhaust fan. There is also a similar case fan in the front grill.
My CPU core peaked at 42C when running UT2K3, with distributed.net in the background.

Kiss them goodbye.
I think maybe you lack perspective and haven't been following this very closely. Also your high UID opinion is less than worthless, lurk moar.
Someone needs to make sure the editors at least read this response. Nail on the head.
Fuck Beta. FUCK DICE :3

States exactly what the problem with the current situation is (I love the Liver and Onions analogy, good show)
... the way we are being forced out.
With a huge raging, diarrhea shit all over our former stomping grounds, forever marking it and dissuading its subsequent use.

ROTFLMAO.
Is that honestly the _first_ thing you thought of when you saw my signature?
It's quite a leap (but I laughed anyway, once I remembered what it was)

it's called PARTICIPATION man. There's only so much portforwarding you can do.

I think a few people misunderstood the joke.
Here's a hint, try a Google Search.
Get it now?
