Booting Linux Faster

krony writes "IBM's DeveloperWorks explains how to decrease boot times for your Linux box. The concept is to load system services in parallel when possible. Most surprising to me is the use of 'make' to handle dependencies between services." The example system shown is able to cut its boot time in half, but the article stresses the effectiveness can vary widly from machine to machine.

Works the same way in the USA too. Linux takes 3-4 times longer to boot than XP does.

I don't give a flying fuck if Linux ever becomes mainstream. It works like a charm for me and my friends.

If the rest of you prefer to reboot, fight viruses, reinstall Widoze regularly, and wrestle with lame "wizards" while not having a clue how things fit together, more power to you. Enjoy your mainstream. I really don't care.

Everything about your post illustrated why Linux is a hobby OS for geeks and not a mainstream one. "It may seem obvious, but if you want Linux to actually boot in a reasonable time, compile a new kernel and tweak a bunch of arcane stuff. But I don't care because I run servers anyway."

Meanwhile, Windows XP on my laptop boots in less than fifteen seconds from BIOS to logon screen. Especially when I hibernate it.

Note: I'm not trolling. I'm making a point.

In the USA Windows already does this. Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 initialize their hardware devices in parallel.

That's why Windows XP takes a tiny fraction of the time to boot that Windows 9x did, and why Windows Server 2003 similarly boots FAR faster than Windows 2000.
