Dynasty Tactics 2 Ships

KOEI announces that Dynasty Tactics 2 is to be unleashed unto North America this week. Based upon the Dynasty Warriors titles, Tactics 2 now features the infamous Lu Bu among its characters. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance just reintroduced me to the genre of the tactical strategy game, and if this installment is like the previous, it should be a good game. The game system sounds interesting as well. From the release: "The game's new Points Evaluation System grades a player's performance based on several criteria including: 'complete defeats' and 'number of tactics linkages.' Players can also explore cities, villages, and tactics training camps. On the streets, you can meet the villagers, obtain items and receive instructions on employing rare tactics with devastating results."

    You mean you haven't been playing Advance Wars (and 2) and you own a GBA?

      Yes, reintroduced. As in played the hell out of them both and moved on, then got back in with FFTA.

      I don't know about you, but Disgaea got me hooked back onto strategy RPGs before FFTA made its official US release. As it stands, I've probably logged more hours in that game than FFTA and Tactics Ogre combined.

      Then again, who am I to argue against The Paper. ;)

      Sadly, I have not played Disgaea yet, despite everything good I have heard about it. This is mostly a direct result of not having seen a GC version, and my not owning a PS2. Oh, and SWG currently ownz my soul, so that doesn't help much either.

    It was hard to find in the press release, and nonexistent in the submission, but Dynasty Tactics 2 is a PS2-only release.

      At this point, if the system isn't mentioned I think the "for Playstation 2" is just assumed.

      But just being "for PS2" is different than being exclusively available on the PS2. I would say that most games released by third parties these days are for the XBox and PS2. The fact that the game is a PS2 exclusive is noteworthy and I certainly wouldn't assume exclusivity unless it was noted.

    It's kind of a shame that Koei has fallen into naming their games to take up the popular trends - that is, after Tactics Ogre spawned FF: Tactics - considering that they've been running strategy games on console gaming hardware longer than almost anybody else still alive. Their historic characters happen to be the same ones chosen for their other games - nobunaga's ambition, rise of an emperor, genghis khan, romance of the three kingdoms, et cetera - and they were a foundation experience in strategy gaming for an entire generation raised without Tom Jolly, Ravensburger, or other *real* physical game makers.

    But, hey, everyone's gotta earn lunch money, I guess.

    Love the game - finished it a couple of times... and still play it (getting Ramza to near godlike status is a hobby)...

    I don't have a GBA... but might consider getting one it FFTA is as good...

    How does DT2 (or even 1) compare to these? I realise that it is tactical... but is it strictly military? Are magic and monsters in the game as well?

      If you loved FF Tactics as much as I did, I'd consider staying away from Tactics Advance. It's not a very good sequel.
      It's a good game in it's own right, but has as much to do with FF Tactics as Tactics Ogre does. The theme is what turned me off the most though, since they opted to go for a cutesy, colorful world and a story about young children adventuring in this new fantasy land and whatnot. I really appreciated the original tactics story with it's heavy paralelling of medieval religious themes.

      Oh well, Disgaea rocks.

      It was one of the most overlooked games of last year in my opinion. No magic and monsters, in the FF:Tactics sense (save for some man-eating tigers) you'll just be fighting other armies on a game board.

      In Japan they call them Simulation RPGs, it's crazy I'm telling ya!

      and most people in the US call them Tactical RPGs, or at least they did back when FF:Tactics came out...

      Or maybe I got lost somewhere in a parallel universe.

      Actually, "strategy RPG" is the more common term for games like FFT. At least among the old school SNES and PC SRPGers.

      tactical strategy a.k.a. Turn-based strategy

      Probably just a marketing decision...tactics appeals to the armchair general types, turn-based sounds outdated compared to realtime. Forgive me if I'm missing something, but every "tactical strategy" game I've heard of was turn based.

    Amusingly, you probably own one of my games, and I posted that from work at my current (non-gaming) job. It's just that I remember how much I hated what the marketroids did to my baby, and I'm commiserating.

    Why not take some of that anger and do something useful with it, like write a game of your own, or take a shower?
