i'm glad you brought this up--i just finished reading 'Under The Banner of Heaven,' the recent book by Jon Krakauer, and it's an excellent and well-researched account of the less savory history of Mormonism and its fundamentalist spinoffs (i'm also familiar with the Mormons since i have relatives in SLC, Utah)...read this book and you'll have a different opinion of the Mormons...the most salient tidbits are: They often have 'visions' where God 'forgives' them of paying their taxes, business debts, house payments, etc... they also have a neat thing called 'Lying for the Lord' where it is considered morally fine to lie to non-mormons...(not to mention poygamy and child brides...)
obviously, as in any religion, the majority of Mormons are good, law abiding folk, however, as a group, they have a historical reputation of being anywhere from less than honest to downright brutal to anybody they consider 'inferior' (read: non-Mormon)
