Fink Binaries for Panther Released

willum448 writes "The binaries for Fink 0.6.1 have been released, this version will now work under Panther." I wonder if selfupdate-cvs will work for me now? I had circular dependency issues before.

You mean this circular dependency? It's been fixed. Also note that they don't recommend doing selfupdate-cvs anymore. Instead, do selfupdate-rsync once to set the mode to rsync and then just do "fink selfupdate" from then on.

As I remember, Panter was supposed to include some sort of package manager; this was mentioned on MacSlash recently I think.

What happened with that? Do any developers have any insights?

Our university gave out free Panther upgrades to all faculty and staff, which was very decent of them. However, they only gave us *3* CDs, so I don't have the updated compilers or development environment. I'm assuming, therefore, that I can't do anything to upgrade Fink until I can the tech people here to give me a copy of CD 4, right? I knew this would come back to bite me, but since I got what amounted to hundreds of dollars worth of free sofware...

Good question. All I know is that earlier this summer, a GUI frontend for DarwinPorts appeared in a Panther build, only to be withdrawn later. I'd like to know what happened too.

Also, what's going on with the metapkg alliance? Sounded promising, but doesn't look like there's much activity. Looks like Fink is the de facto packaging standard on OS X for now.

As for dports being in panther, a combination of technical issues (dports not being in a state they were willing to support forever) and political issues, it got pulled. I don't know if there are plans to re-add it in a later release.

As for metapkg, the idea of a huge database of packages kind of died out, but we've started trying to fill out the wiki with useful porting info, hopefully in time it will become more useful.

Also, the mailing lists are there for anyone wanting to post problems, but we're getting about 2 e-mails a month, so it's not really happened much. :)

Metpkg was never going to be a new joint packaging system, only a resource for all of the packaging groups to avoid some duplication of work by sharing patches for ported software and compilation tips and such.

when you install that, you need to look into doing a custom install if you want the X11 SDK installed.

I didn't. Then I installed fink. Upon adding add'l software via fink, I found that I needed the SDK.

So I'm reinstalling Xcode now, w/ the SDK.
