AMD Breaks Ground on New Chip Facility

philthedrill writes "AMD announced that they have broken ground on Fab 36, which again will be located in Dresden, Germany. The 300 mm fab is expected to start volume production in 2006. There's more information at CBS MarketWatch." AMD will be moving from its current 200 mm wafer process, and looking to save money through the higher efficiency of the new process, as well as keep up with expected demand for their next generation processors. The MarketWatch article also contains some speculation about probable partners for AMD.

    hi there,

yes. tax brakes sure were an issue. but being inside the euro zone certainly was *not* an issue. first of all the biggest market is still the us of a iirc. and with the euro attacking 1.20 $ being in the euro zone is not exactly an advantage. secondly they don't finish the chips there. what you buy as athlon is not a german product but a malaysian (?) if you look at an athlon there's no 'made in germany' but 'assembled in malaysia' (singling out and packing is done there) so i guess amd has to deal with custom for selling athlons in the EU too.
on a side note you're right about the burden of a pretty complete welfare system on the wages. we also have longer vacations :o) (20 working days minimum by law!)

..why a company named American Micro Devices is locating their plant in Germany and not here in America?

This is fucking ridiculous, they are giving jobs to the very same people that oppose freedom for Iraqi's.

I wouldn't mind it if they located the plant in the UK somewhere, because judging by the warm reception President Bush got, I'd say they are freedom lovers too.

It's very feasable. Of course the tax cuts to millionaires (which end up trickling down as the milionaires buy more goods and services, although not necessarily made in USA) and fiscal burden on the states have a negative impact on their power to invest locally. However, they can still raise money by closing a few schools and disbanding some police and firefighter units. Priorities are being re-aligned, presumably for the best.
