"Forking" Greatest Danger of Adopting Open Source?

Sauer of the Department of Economics at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and president of the Jerusalem Institute for Market Studies. has written a article saying that the hidden costs of OS add up to a higher TCO. However, The greater danger Sauer writes, is that of a OS project forking. "The forking of open-source projects occurs when passionate disputes between open-source software developers over product design lead to the splintering of projects into a multitude of varieties. With proprietary software, forking generally does not take place since development is centralized within a firm and disciplined by market forces."" I've always seen Forking as something of a blessing... it's the abandoned projects are the ones that are in danger.

The fact of the matter is, unix is ALWAYS behind windows. Until everyone UNITES, Microsoft will never be rightfully usurped.
This isn't just a problem in open source development either. Happens with multiplayer online game servers (Everyone decides to make their own mod, and we end up with 5000 different variation servers, each with 2 people on it. Hooray. Continuum and Quake3 both suffer from this.)

Lets get one thing straight: open source is not perfect, and Microsoft is not the only company to write proprietary software; they just happen to be the most successful one. But everyone, from open source advocates to Larry Ellison, knocks MS just because it's the trendy thing to do. But in my experience, based on 10+ years as a both a developer and user of *nix & Windows, Microsoft makes a better product, and it's much closer to perfect than open source will ever be.

As you all know, Germany was against the war on Iraq and against BUSH. But 4 weeks ago, our second largest private tv station (SAT1) was bought out by Haim SABAN, jewish investor with an agenda.
In spite of the best yearly earnings this station ever had, the program director of this station was fired by SABAN and replaced by another jew (Roger SCHAWINSKI). This man has voiced strong support for the struggle for Greater Israel before and has always supported even the most controversial moves of the Israeli government.
The ethnic cleansing continued yesterday: the most popular late night entertainer in Germany, Harald SCHMIDT, spearhead of the tv station Sat1, intelligent, liberal and courageous, was removed from the programme. Harald SCHMIDT always voiced strong disagreement with the US-led war on Iraq, he has taunted President BUSH for its numerous mistakes and unintelligent commentaries. Since the beginning of the Iraq war, SCHMIDT had mounted dozens of pro-UNO and pro-peace signs throughout the studio decorations.
This comes after this summer, a medium popular politician of the liberals, Juergen W. MOELLEMANN "committed suicide". He had critisized Isreal, Ariel SCHARON and the head of the jewish council of Germany, Paul SPIEGEL in particular for "exploting the holocaust for their own purposes and to silence even reasonable criticism". In spite of his reasonable argumentation, he was called a revisionist right wing fearmonger from many private TV stations, but he still had strong support by his voters. Two weeks after a new record in votes from his county, he was killed in a parachuting accident. He was a professional parachuter, so it was officially called a suicide. (less than 2 hours afterwards). He had many plans ahead in his personal schedule, one of them was the planned founding of a new and independent liberal party in Germany.
In short: critisize BUSH or Israel - lose your job or your life.
