New Intermediate Language Proposed

WillOutPower writes "Sun is inviting Cray (of supercomputer fame) and IBM (needs no introduction...) to join and create a new intermediate run-time language for high-performance computing. Java's bytecode, Java Grande, and Microsoft's IL language for the Common Language Runtime, it seems a natural progression. I wonder if the format will be in XML? Does this mean ubiquitous grid computing? Maybe now I won't have to write my neural network in C for performance :-)"

...another intermediate language. This is never going to fly. If we wanted one executable formate that runs quickly on every machine, we'd use one processor. It's just never going to happen. And it's good for business. There's a reason to innovate and build a fast chip, even if it means writing a new compiler. Building these endless layers of abstraction and interpretation just makes everything a cluttered mess.

Suck it up and write native code...

Formula for getting a story on /. follows:
    1. Link to an actual story.
    2. Throw in lateset buzzwords (grid computing, XML, your choice!)
    3. Don't sound completely illiterate (use four syllable words like ubiquitous).

    Rinse, Repeat, Lather! :)
