Real Launches New Player, Music Store

kforeman writes "You may have heard Real's many announcements today, including the release of RealPlayer 10 with vastly improved codecs, as well as our new Music Store. As a result of the player engine being developed in the Helix community, we're able to offer the benefits of the new RealAudio and RealVideo in in the Helix Player for Linux. We read Slashdot here at Real, especially when the subject of our company or technology comes up, so we know some of you may not have liked recent versions of our player. This release represents a much friendlier direction for us; more options that were 'opt-out' are now 'opt-in'. In developing RealVideo 10, our codec team has been working closely with the Doom9 community, and has been posting updates to that forum (look for references to RV9-EHQ). The tests that have been performed by that community show RealVideo doing quite well against the competition." There's a CNET News article discussing the announcements, including the jukebox's ability to play "secure downloads from the iTunes store", for those looking for another point of view.

Also I note that you can no longer download just "Quicktime" Apple now forces you to install iTunes. For businesses, there is no need nor want for itunes. We'll be moving to Quicktime alternative, as we have no choice, we can't install itunes just to play mov files.

We've never allowed real audio players on any machine, period, so there's no need for real player alternative.

I have a great story about watching Lord of the Rings ripped in REAL PLAYER.

Summary: Saruman has turned to the dark side, he knows Gandalf is the more powerful wizard, and would never turn away from the light. His only chance in defeating the Gray Wizard is in taking control of his soul.
Gandalf entered into Middle Earth as one of the Istari, and was deemed the wisest of the order by Galadriel. Gandalf was the bearer of Narya, the Ring of Fire, given to him by Cirdan when he arrived in Middle Earth.
Yet Gandalf was not alone. Saruman came to Middle Earth as the Chief of the Istari, and was the head of the White Council.
But for many years, Saruman concealed his secret desires for power and glory, and for Gandalf. Saruman despised Gandalf, for I believe he knew who was the more powerful, and he knew he could never sway Gandalf to aid him in his evil plots, yet that never stopped his desire for him. Saruman believed that by possessing Gandalf's body, that somehow he could also possess his thoughts, or maybe even his very soul.
The White Wizard stood staring out the open window, but seeing nothing. His own thoughts blinded him from the view of the moors outside. The sunlight was cast off his white robes so that anyone looking at him would have been blinded by its brilliance, yet his soul had long ago turned blacker than the darkest night.
Slowly he came out of his reverie, feeling someone's approach, no, not someone, but Gandalf.
He turned slowly away from the window as he began to speak. "Do not bother knocking Gandalf, you may enter. I wondered when you would seek me out. I have felt the turmoil of your mind, it radiates from you like a dark cloud, will you now speak to me of your troubles?"
Gandalf started for but a mere moment, searching the eyes of his friend and mentor. He had not known that anyone knew anything was amiss, but realized that he could hide little from Saruman. He crossed the room slowly, taking moments to gather his thoughts before speaking.
"I feel the dark forces growing stronger. The winds of change are upon us, and a battle greater than any seen before looms on the horizon. You and I will both play large roles in this battle, yet....." Gandalf stopped, unable to say more.
Somehow he felt that as the battle began to rage changes would come between himself and his master, that lines would be drawn, never to be crossed again.
Yet even as he was given a glimpse of the future he refused to believe it, for believing it would be saying that his master, his friend.... He couldn't even finish the thought.
Saruman moved closer, and gently placed his hand on Gandalf's shoulder. "My friend, the future can never be truly revealed to us, we can only glimpse what may come to pass. But nothing, no fate is ever written in stone."
Gandalf nodded in agreement, yet his heart still felt heavy. He turned slowly, preparing to beg leave, when Saruman's voice stopped him.
"Will you come with me for a moment? I have great need to share something with you, something that might help clear your thoughts, and thus ease your mind."
Gandalf looked into the eyes of Saruman, saw only honesty and concern there, then slowly he nodded his assent.
Saruman led him from the room, down a long corridor to his more private chambers. Gandalf felt uneasy, as he had never entered Saruman's private suites. Why should he be bade entrance now? As if Saruman could hear his thoughts, the white wizard turned to him.
"I have allowed no one to enter these rooms in many a year. Inside I keep tools so powerful that I almost fear using them myself, let alone allow some young trainee with good intentions to destroy all we have worked to achieve."
Saruman stopped before a grand door. The wood was inlaid with vines and flowers of which grew all over Middle Earth, and seemed to glow with a inner light of its own. Saruman waved his hand over the door, causing the vines to shimmer like silver, and the flowers into gold. The door opened without a sound, and through the doorway Gandalf could see
