  1. hold your horses... on Unmanned Aerial Drones Coming Soon Above U.S. · · Score: 0

How is this any different than putting cameras outside of buildings or putting those cameras at intersections to keep people from running red lights? It's not like they're buzzing these things through your house. Are any rights really being violated here? It's no different than a cop driving by and taking a look.

If you get caught playing games on the clock, you can expect these things. This is NOT news. When I worked at a small software company years ago, I was instructed to remove ALL games from ALL computers in the building. Anyone caught playing games would be removed. Of course they were all hypocrites since they (management) let me play Tribes and StarCraft with them for my entire shift some days... I guess it's good to have friend in higher positions.

What kind of hardware would this require? There have to be billions of terabytes of data flowing back and forth across the internet. How would a group store all of this data? How long would it be held? Would tax money even remotely begin to cover all of this? Just my $0.02US... and for the super-paranoid: how says they aren't already doing this?

Ok, people are spoofing everything already.... IP's.... MAC addresses..... why not this too? This is something that I see being hacked in under 24 hours if it ever gets put into you. Wouldn't your OS have to have support/drivers for this chip to function at all? Would this mean that the OSS community would easily be able to disable and enable it at will? It's like DRM being pwned by a sharpie: pointless.

  10. Trollbait! on Intel's Per-Chip Cost Averages $40 · · Score: 0

I've worked for Intel in the past (I was running cable for an engineering lab) and talking with the engineers, it's not mystery why they have to sell their CPUs for so much. They have setup "dark facilities" across the country that are totally automated to produce these processors. The facilities alone cost tens of millions. Let's not forget teams of engineers that spend years developing new lines of processors. Then there are the marketing gurus that have to promote the processors. I really wonder how much profit they're actually making even with such high prices.

There are a few towns here in South Carolina that their sole source of revenue is speeding tickets. Springdale, South Congaree, Elgin, and several others WILL give you a ticket for as little as 2mph over the speed limit. The judges will NOT reduce the fine either. I wish we could argue the authenticity of a camera photo. Unfortunately, judges usually take the word of cops over civilians.

  20. The classic arguement! on Asa Dotzler on Why Linux Isn't Ready for the Desktop · · Score: 0

"Linux is cheaper [for the desktop]!" Yeah that's true for people that actually buy their software. How many Windows users hear about a piece of software (Office, Photoshop, even Windows itself) and ask their friend "hey, could you burn me a copy of that?" To a lot (majority probably) of Windows users, Windows is just as cheap as Linux. Combine that with the "idiot-friendly" mentality of Windows, and there is a great reason for not using Linux.

Another problem is uniformity. In Windows, every program has a "setup.exe" or "install.exe" that will install a program and put icons on your desktop and start menu. I've tinkered with Linux/FreeBSD for years and have gotten entirely too frustrated with RPM files, TAR files, CVS, and god knows what else, only to find that after installing (if it installed) that I couldn't find the program anywhere to use it.

Maybe there needs to be ONE standard for installation of software?
