Warp Records Reject DRM, Go Bleep
DJ Phase writes "Warp Records, an independent label for electronic music (featuring artists such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Boards of Canada), has made their entire back catalog available thru Bleep, a new digital download service. Individual tracks are $1.35 for those of us in the USA, with EPs and full albums in the $4 to $10 price range. You can download Aphex Twin's rare, groundbreaking Hangable Auto Bulb EP for $4.29. To quote from the FAQ: 'We are at present the only store to offer very high quality MP3 files,' and 'Bleep music has no DRM or copy protection built in. We believe that most people like to be treated as customers and not potential criminals'."
ln -s DRM ../yourass
We prefer to be given stuff for free, so thanks to Richard Schmuck for buying the MP3 and sharing it on Kazaa.
I have been pwned because my
Regardless of how we would like to be treated, it's when we stop acting like criminals that we'll stop being treated like criminals. RIAA and MPAA wouldn't be looking at copy protection if movies and music weren't regularly pirated and resold without their knowledge and consent.

And in related news....wait. NOBODY FUCKING CARES.
...but I have been waiting to purchase music from Warp records online for quite a long time. With iTunes and other music services offering mainstream music, albeit DRM crippled, there are so many smaller independant labels that are not represented online.
So, not only is this a step in the right direction for anti-DRM music downloads, its a step in the right directions for getting smaller, lesser known labels distributing music online. I most certainly will be purchasing (its been awhile..hehe) music from this service.
Must have been designed by a Mac-using pixel shunter who's never reduced a browser window to smaller than 1600x1200.
I'm sorry if I haven't offended anyone

Who the fuck are these people? I download songs from Kazaa that are unreleased/underground songs from artists that I know and like. Artists who's CDs I have bought. Artists that who's concerts I'd consider attending. Artists who get played on the radio/MTV/MMUSA at least once per month. Who is going to download these people's stuff? Isn't a pre-requisite that you know that an artist exists before you search for his/her material?

Because both of the people outside of Canada who have heard of these bands will be able to buy their stuff faster than they can find each other and share it.
I will assume that these are all talended musicians with a loyal local fan base, and good music but this smells like a way to get free publicity for Warp Records' acts.
