SPEWS Adds DSL Reports to Block List
Kylow writes "Last year, Slashdot publicized our efforts at DSL Reports to pursue a group of spammers who had spammed our forums. The Slashdot community immediately pitched in to help, and the publicity wiped the sites owned by the spammers off the internet. Fast-forward to today, and the popular yet often draconian block-list SPEWS has added DSL Reports to their blocklist due to the activities of other websites hosted on NAC.net. DSL Reports users are less than happy. This is hardly the first time SPEWS has been accused of going too far."
DSLR/BBR sucks anyways. I should know. I've been posting there since September 22, 2001. Their news is slow to get posted and the forums are way overmoderated.

ISPs have their own processes for dealing with complaints. Sometimes these are inadequate, but SPEWS seems to consider themselves the sole authority on the matter. They are not. They're just a bunch of jumped up nerds with way too much power, and rapidly falling credibility.
To respond to all of Rob Baby Raper Malda's statements would take up too much room and time. I would like to address the most ostentatious ones, though. I want to share this with you because I indubitably maintain that a number of unprofessional flakes have succumbed to excessive drug use, alcoholism, and other addictive behavior indicating maladaptive mechanisms. My views, of course, are not the issue here. The issue is that my goal is to shatter the adage that we're supposed to shut up and smile when he says raving things. I might not be successful at achieving that goal, but I unmistakably do have to try. Why does he want to brainwash the masses into submission? Psychologists might suggest that it can be distinguished only with difficulty which of his subalterns act out of inner stupidity or incompetence and which only pretend to for whatever homicidal, uneducated reason. Counselors might insist that Rob's is the prototypical face of materialism. Sociologists might point out that he has an uncritical -- almost a worshipful -- attitude toward wild grizzlers. I agree with the above assessments, but if the past is any indication of the future, Rob will once again attempt to sow the seeds of discord.
The sesquipedalianism "debate" is not a debate. It is a harangue, a politically motivated, brilliantly publicized, ethically bankrupt attack on progressive ideas. Rob has stated that the health effects of secondhand smoke are negligible. One clear inference from that statement -- an inference that is never really disavowed -- is that he is a model citizen. Now that's just hopeless. His relationship to the real world is peripheral. But what, you may ask, does any of that have to do with the theme of this letter, viz., that our sacred values and traditions mean nothing to him? Well, I asked the question, so I should answer it. Let me start by saying that he says that he is the ultimate authority on what's right and what's wrong. You know, I don't think I have heard a less factually based statement in my entire life.
Some of us have an opportunity to come in contact with sophomoric paper-pushers on a regular basis at work or in school. We, therefore, may be able to gain some insight into the way they think, into their values; we may be able to understand why they want to hammer a few more nails into the coffin of freedom. No matter how close he's come to making me have to fight with one hand tied behind my back, he won't be satisfied until he finds a way to mold your mind and have you see the world not as it is, but as he wants you to see it. The poisonous wine of negativism had been distilled long before Rob entered the scene. Rob is merely the agent decanting the poisonous fluid from its bottle into the jug that is world humanity.
The only weapons he has in his intellectual arsenal are book burning, brainwashing, and intimidation. That's all he has, and he knows it. One other thing: If natural selection indeed works by removing the weakest and most genetically unfit members of a species, then Rob is clearly going to be the first to go. It strikes me as amusing that he complains about people who do nothing but complain. Well, news flash! Rob does nothing but complain.
I respect his contrivances, although only through education can individuals gain the independent tools they need to embrace the cause of self-determination and recognize the leading role and clearer understanding of those people for whom the quintessential struggle is an encompassing liberation movement against the totality of tribalism. But the first step is to acknowledge that Rob expresses insufficient concern about the ozone layer, the Bhopal tragedy, and lesbian theater. I always catch hell whenever I say something like that, so let me assure you that he seeks scapegoats for his own shortcomings by blaming the easiest target he can find, that is, what I call unregenerate, condescending control freaks. Right, the point is that you are defending behavior that is as ethically problematic as spamming. I'll go out on a bit of a limb and say its more unethical than spamming. Yeah, yeah, fuck I hate spam, too - blah, fucking, blah.
But purposely using innocent people as human shields to force someone who you feel is not jumping through _your_ hoops as fast and as correctly as you want and then beating your chest self-righteously and saying "we aren't doing anything wrong, its the communist sympathizer ISP's over there - they are to blame for the collateral damage and by the way we don't force anyone to use our list, we just force innocent customers to enforce our will for us." - Wow, pure evil-fucking genius - we don't "block" anyone, we don't force anyone the use the list, we are just catalysts who orchestrate a reaction that fucks innocent third parties - strangely similar to what spammers do, hhmmm.
SPEWS and similar organizations are forcing innocent third parties to do their dirty work, while they sit back and say, "See, you recalcitrant ISP's & netblock owners, do as you are told [by us, in our smug, self-righteous tone] your poor serf customers will burn you themselves - the dirty savages."
Fucking self-important, smug bastards. These are the same assholes who believed they were doing god's work while "helping deluded souls free themselves from Satan" through the use of cleansing torture.
Organizations that use these methodologies have lost the moral high ground, the same as every self-righteous crusade throughout history has.
The ones who have SOLE authority on the matter are the administrators who CHOOSE to use SPEWS,

As someone involved with running some servers I can tell you some facts about these ISP. The first are way more expensive then the last. Strange eh?
Either move to a better ISP or learn to live with the fact the email has freedom. This includes the freedom for me to block you. There is no right to send email to anyone.
Ask yourselve this. Do I gotta open your mail? Do I gotta answer your telephone call? Do I gotta open the door for you? Do I have to answer your question when you approach me in the street? No, no, no and no. So why on earth do you demand that I accept your email?
If you are on SPEWS or another blacklist then your ISP sucks. Get a better one for email (you can still host your site there just requires slightly more skill to setup) alone, shouldn't cost much unless of course you spam.
BUT STOP THINKING THE WORLD HAS A DUTY TO RECEIVE EMAIL FROM EVERY KNOW SPAMHOLE IN THE WORLD.

I was in a theatre is a suburb that was once unmixed. I sat down in a upper row seat with no one around. A large group of teenage blacks walked in a did a very odd dance just so that one of them would not have to sit in a chair next to me.

Anyone bitching about getting blocked by SPEWS, but not dealing with it properly by threatening their spam-friendly ISP or moving to one that's not spam-friendly is either lazy, ignorant or is themselves spam-friendly.
