Windows XP 64-Bit Customer Preview Program
MBCook writes "I just notice that Microsoft has a new Windows XP 64-Bit Customer Preview Program starting today (February 3rd). If you have a AMD Opteron or Athlon64, you can go to the download page to get your copy. It's a pre-release copy that will expire in 360 days (which probably means the final will be out by then). Now Intel just changed their 64-bit plans, and all of a sudden this appears. Speculate away!"

It would be a bad move from Intel if they implemented Amd64. Let's face it, most people will follow Intel no matter what. When Athlons were faster than Intel chips, people were still buying Intel. Now that AMD has still a much better price/performance ratio, people are still buying Intel. Amd has less then 15% of the market and Amd64 is only a fraction of this. Amd64 has no significance. Amd64 will probably go the same way as "3D now".
If Intel follow AMD then this would give some credibility to AMD. And this is the last thing Intel wants. As for compatibility... who cares ? Do you really think Microsoft or any other company will refuse to make a special version for Intel ?

Same here. I experience this quite often on my dual AMD 1800 box at work (winxp). Often a ctrl-alt-del will show (explorer.exe) as "not responding". Frustrating.
