The Trouble with RFID

wintermute42 writes "Simson Garfinkel, author of Practical Unix & Internet Security along with Gene Spafford and Alan Schwartz, has an article in The Nation on RFID tags. They're not just for tracking stuff. They can track you too."

I could see the problem with nefarious rfid tags being hidden into clothes, food etc.. but the usefulness of this would be rather limited, because the tags would eventuall be moved or removed. I, however, can also see the positive points of tracking people (theft protection in stores, which is deactived on the actual product when they leave the store.) we already have this type of thing now (ink tags, on merchandise inventory control systems, etc...) however the problem with RFID is that it is not as noticeable and it can be completely untraceable (i heard of rfid tags being half the size of a grain of rice... maybe smaller, i havent kept up on it)
