SCO Names 1st Lawsuit Target: AutoZone [Updated]
An anonymous reader writes "News.com
reports that SCO has filed the first (of two) soon to be infamous lawsuits. This one is aimed against car part retailer AutoZone, a multi-billion, Fortune 500 company according to the site. Who's next?" Another reader excerpts from SCO's posted claim: 'AutoZone violated SCO's UNIX copyrights by running versions of the Linux operating system that contain code, structure, sequence and/or organization from SCO's proprietary UNIX System V code in violation of SCO's copyrights.'
Update: 03/03 16:28 GMT by T : njan writes with the news that SCO just announced during their ongoing conference call another lawsuit, this one "to be filed against Daimler-Chrysler, alleging that they are infringing SCO's copyright by using code relating to 'core operating system functionality' of SCO System 5."
...giving Mormons a bad name, one day at a time.
I used to work for Autozone, and I can tell you that they used to run UNIX for all of their parts lookup terminals, and they switched to LINUX. And I can almost guarantee you that code that they wrote in-house (under UNIX, that probably used some of SCO's code) was copied over to the LINUX operating system. SCO picked the right people to pick on. (former UNIX customer, did a lot of development work in-house, and then switched to LINUX). So beware if your company fits that mold...
And I'm torn, because I hate SCO for this lawsuit stuff, but being a former (and still disgruntled, after 5 years) employee of AutoZone, I'm not sure who I want to lose. Is it possible for them both to be financially hurt in this lawsuit?

Fuck off, you anal Amerifuck !
I'm shocked that SCO hasn't attempted to sue Linus Torvalds yet.
So much for all the people who bragged about knowing it was google. *And of course, if they don't, I'm going to ignore it and hope no one notices :)
I noticed, mr. know-it-all.
Serously though, who would have guessed AutoZone. I didnt even know about them until today. Something tells me this will be a big advertiser for them.
SAILING MISHAP
actually if you trade in a chevy for a ford, you should be shot, not sued.
cheers.
This is my sig. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
fuck SCO, i wish their company would just die off, so everyone won't have to be so paranoid. fuckin retards.
The SCO business model took a turn for the worst with John Edwards dropping out of the race for President.
Edwards got rich by filing and winning frivolous lawsuits, which is exactly what the SCO business model is. SCO has a friend in Bush and Kerry, but they would have really had a friend with Edwards.
Go get a job offer from Microsoft ... please?
We do not live in the 21st century. We live in the 20 second century.
you are sexist
And 30 million jobs will be added by election time.
</sarcasm>
Ok, I'm going to burn some karma here:
W is not concerned about jobs lost. In fact, if the country would just do like they are supposed to the women would all be taking care of the home and not stealing jobs from men who are supposed to be the real bread winners. We all refer to 'right' and 'left', politically speaking but you just know they know it's really 'right' and 'wrong'.
It's not clear most of the people who care passionately about the Linux-SCO fight are old enough to drive...
Who gives a fat sack of wet dicks? Mormoms are fucked anyway. They believe some dude read a book about God out of a hat, or some shit, it was on South Park the other week. Anyway, Moroms piss me off. I usually dispatch them from my front porch with an 18-gauge over-under to the chest. It works pretty well.
It happened some days ago. I couldn't believe that SCO filled a suit against me. It is a fact I have some Slackware Linux CDs here in my shack, but they only caused me trouble.
After days trying to install Slackware, passing through very intricate problems such as setting kernel flags, using fdisk on the command line, etc. I couldn't have even a decent graphic environment running properly (I mean decent because it could run at 320x200). Fortunately my other machine, which runs Windows 95 flawlessly, could help me to dial into the internet and search for help on configuring Linux. But it was in vain, after posting several messages in newbie's groups and trying to get answers in IRC channels, all I got was a huge amount of "RTFM" statements. The documentation was too scarce on how to compile kernel modules and have xfree use them. After some weeks fighting against this xfree nonsense, I figured out that Linux was not supposed to be a desktop operating system, it was designed to be a server OS. So I decided to use it through a remote command prompt (shell). At this point I figured out my network card (a jumperless one) was not recognized by the kernel. Actually, several other hardware devices did not work properly, such as my audio card and my mouse wheel on gpm. At this point I realized this Linux thing was useless and reformatted the machine, installing the much better Win98.
Now I'm even more troubled because of this Linux thing. SCO demands that I go to the court and pay them more money that what I'll be able to make in my whole life. The only thing I can pay for are my Windows and Office licenses. Do you think I can get a lawyer to defend me? I think it's right for SCO to go after these Linux people who stole its proprietary code, and I regret having "used" Linux once in my life. I wish SCO have mercy and free me from any accusations.
Here's one possible way this can go. .
Who does the Auto Industry tip its hat to? That's right. Big Oil.
Who controls Big Oil? That's right. Evil Government.
Does Evil Government like Open Source?
No. They Do Not. In fact, Homeland Security is very deliberately run on Microsoft, because Gates is willing to play ball and put Big Brother code into Windows.
All these people are in bed with each other, and the unwritten rules of conduct and old croney secret winks makes this whole scenario look dangerous to me. All the Auto Industry has to do is put up a half-assed show and then deliberately take a fall, allowing SCO to win, thus setting huge legal precedent in regards to the legality of Linux.
Still, I have faith in Evil's tendency to be run by a bunch of coke-heads. One favorite quote from Colin Powell. .
Yeah. The White House is run on sleeping pills. (As compared to Jolt Cola and Mountain Dew driven code monkeys where Linux found its birth. --I think Caffeine is one of the very few 'good' drugs in the world; peps up brain activity without altering awareness or screwing with perception.) So, really, there's all kinds of ways SCO's big play can go wrong. Plus there's the unexpected random factors which control freeks can't deal with and never take into account exactly because they are control freeks.
Still. . . with a suddenly visible mechanism in place which can vault SCO to the top, I am at once feeling a lot more attentive!
