Ivan writes "According to the DARPA Grand Challenge Status Board, 2 bots were withdrawn before the race started and the remaining 13 were all disabled. Red Team and SciAutonics II tied at 7 miles, a bit short of the 142 miles required." CNN has coverage and interviews.

    Did these teams at all test their robots before competing or did they just straight line it. Surely they would have scoped out their designated path prior to competition and tested some similar paths.

    Spent 13 million on this "challenge"? To do what? I thought the "chalengers" where footing their own bill, and just how does laying out a course in the desert cost 13 mill? Typical US Gov project. And besides that, all you GNU/Lefties understand who DARPA is, right? I better not hear one peep about the Evil American War Machine outa you guys.

    They spend 13 million sending a bunch of remote controlled cars 7 miles?

    FFS WHY???

    The one on the CNN page looks like a bog standard RC car... You can get those for $20. I think next year I'll host it and keep the difference in cost...

    open source software is built on a foundation of copying proprietary software, except in situations where there's no profit to be made.

    Linux - cloned UNIX. Xfree - cloned parrot poop. See anything on the Freshmeat.net listings for further examples.

    In short, you won't see an open source team until you've seen a hundred closed source teams already successful. Good luck.
