Atari Lynx Emulator Goes Open Source

Bill Kendrick writes "Handy, the Atari Lynx emulator, has been re-released as Open Source software. (So that libSDL port I've always wanted might become a reality!) Handy's official website has moved to SourceForge, and the source-code is in CVS!" There are some neat homebrew Atari Lynx titles, both demos and game prototypes, available, too.

If you have a 2800, you could probably get some serious coin from it on eBay. If you mean a 2600, I don't know how a Lynx emulator would bring you any closer to text-based browsing. But reading any text on a 2600 would be quite painful. They're much more useful for playing four player Warlords.

I remember the good ol' days when I used to play with my Atari Lynx. Sure, the design wasn't too great, and there weren't many good games on it due to poor support, but man, the few that were there were just plain cool. Chip's Challenge certainly being one of the cooler titles to make it there.

Of course, it failed because it went up against the Game Boy, and suffered from Game Gear syndrome (too big, too many batteries, too short a time length just for color and light). One thing I did like tho was its support for lefties....

I'm gonna have to check this out soon to replay some games.

Interesting enough, a PocketPC-port is available here, yet it is not mentioned on the official Handy site on SF.

    About time too. :)

Now I can port it my Zaurus.
Then I don't have to carry around the monster Lynx itself.

The Lynx has some of the best handheld games around because it has conversion of loads of Atari arcade games and Amiga games.

    Good good.
