KidHash writes "Following on from last months Slashdot story, it appears Microsoft has changed its tune with the BBC reporting that SP2 will not install on XP installations using the '20 most pirated product IDs.'"

I've tried Service Pack 2 and it's a car wreck. From my experiences, it looks like Service Pack 2 won't install on *any* key - pirated or not.

nor care, and I have yet to see a convincing argument as to why MS should waste time, effort and resources on keeping pirates' systems up to date.

Pirates also engage in some of the most idiotic practices you can, as far as security goes. They often run files of questionable integrity, blindly. Why should MS be concerned with saving them from their own criminal actions? The best thing they could do for business is to stick it to pirates.

You are missing the point of SP2 which might just keep ligitimate XP users more protected from the attacks. They paid money and will be getting updates.

Let the pirates attack each other, you and your miracle Linux machine will be safe and sound, as will my Linux machine ... which i use only as a curiosity since its 100x harder to use, and has almost no compatability with the windows based files I and my industry deal with 100% of the time.

Linux users are expected to take the time to learn how to use their unfriendly OS properly with all its bizarre, unobvious command systems ... yet you won't put even the slightest expectation on a windows user, that they should take 2 minutes to plug in a simple firewall that will block nearly all the problems you speak of.

If the average windows user takes 10% of the effort needed to learn Linux, and puts it into learning Windows properly, they won't see any viruses. The difference is you can use windows easily for so many things with little effort, where you have to beat your head on your keyboard for weeks to get most Open Source 'solutions' to work half assed on a linux box.

Than those are moron techs. "Hey, I'll use a well-known pirate key because I'm too lazy to get the real key!"

Look, people, pirates don't have a right to the service pack. Microsoft has never said SP2 would install on pirate copies. Slashdot is flat-out lying about this one in its headline. When they reported last time that SP2 would install on pirate copies, it was merely a rumor that the submitter sent in and the editor posted. Microsoft immediately dismissed the rumor at WinHEC the next day--of course, that didn't get reported here. Same thing with WinFS being "cancelled." It was a flat-out falsehood that people gobbled up to mock Microsoft some more (much to everyone else's amusement).

You can't trust this place for real, factual tech news anymore. What's worse is that 80% of Linux newcomers start coming here and base their worldview almost entirely on Slashdot headlines. If you followed this place as they do, Microsoft has "changed its tune again on SP2 installs." It absolutely hasn't--it's a complete lie. But nothing will change around here. Journalistic integrity and fact-checking is just not a consideration for CmdrTaco, despite this website being the bastion for Linux and geek news right now.

Before, Microsoft was evil because they were using piracy to spread their monopoly. Now, they're evil because they're not allowing those poor lazy techs and those poor little software pirates to install the SP?
