Next-Gen Xbox To Lack Backwards Compatibility?

An anonymous reader writes "Biz news site Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that Microsoft's Xbox 2 won't be backward compatible with games for the current Xbox, and quoting 'sources close to Microsoft's senior Xbox executives' explaining some of the thinking behind the decision. All very cloak and dagger, although I guess whoever told them would probably be in line for a firing if they found out... So, is Microsoft right or wrong on this one? Have any Slashdot readers ever actually used the backwards compatibility on their PlayStation 2?"

Despite using the same MIPS core chip used by the PS1 as the main CPU for the PS2 I/O processor, the emulation of the radically different graphics architecture wasn't perfect to this very day, and there are still games that glitch.

With Xbox and Xbox 2, there are even more differences, PPC vs. Intel, Nvidia vs. ATI, etc.

Given that console games rely heavily on the fact that underlying hardware is the same to get maximum performance (using hardcoded delay loops, writing direct GPU microcode rather than abstract shader programs, etc and such), it's even more important to make an emulation that will play games faithfully, and makes the task all that much more harder.

Wasn't GNAA the first group to port Linux to the Xbox? Forgive me if I'm mistaken, as I am new here. I just saw their postings about it and wondered if someone could confirm.

The huge Xbox controller *IS* the one they're talking about. When the Xbox first came out, M$ put out all this crap about how the controller is sooooooooooo superior and they had focus groups who tested it, etc. etc. Problem was everyone I know hated it with a passion. That's why they had to come out with the S-type controller. Now, I believe all xboxes come with s-type and I'm not even sure you can buy the originals new any more.

Oh Come on! This is the same crap that keeps software vendors, and especially hardware vendors light-years behind where they could be in technology.

And we're not even talking about millions of $ invested in Business-oriented hardware/software here, we're talking about a frickin black box that you play video games on! So what if you have a little private library of CDs that allow you to pretend that you're a tiny magical man or that you know how to drive an Indy car. So you can't play them on a new product. SO WHAT!

Let the developers do their thing without worrying about if it plays some old crap or not.

You're joking, right? My hands might be slightly 'moulded' to the Playstation controller due to hundreds of hours of play time, but the XBox controller is the worst controller ever invented! It's awful to use, and I certainly for one can't tell where any of the buttons are. Ugh.
